  • Edge feathering on one side

Posted by Arvid Utas on August 29, 2010 at 3:13 pm

I can’t seem to find a solution for this problem even though it feels like it should be a common one, maybe there’s a super easy way to fix and I’m just being blind but anyways, here it is:

When using the cropping function in the Motion tab or when using the garbage matte I tend to find myself in a situation where I want to feather the edge of ONE side. But the feather-function autocrapically applies itself to all four sides. How do I do this??

    Many thanks,
    Arvid

Basic FCP will not do this.
There is a free plugin out there that will let you do this.
    Can’t remember the name…

can’t you put the same video on upper layer and mask it so as to reveal only the edge feather of lower video layer?

You need Andy’s Simple Crop. If I remember right, it allows you to adjust edge feathering on individual sides.

    Thanks for the help everybody!
I tried Andys plugin and it looks like it is exactly what I’m looking for but the feathering feature doesn’t seem to work! The ugly border works fine but nothing happens when the feather is changed…Any ideas?

you can achieve the same thing using a filter built into fcp called mask shape which will let you create and place a mask and then combine it with the mask feather filter; these are both located in the matte section of your filter list

Everyone-there is a really simple solution for feathering on one side in fcp

you will need to make a mask prior to adding the feathering -so when you make the mask – usually a 4 point Mask Shape- extend the 3 sides that you do not want an a feathered edge on outside of the image area in an amount equal or greater to the feathering.

That should allow you to output with only a single side having the feathering.
