Hi Could anyone working with AVCHD offer any advice. I have just started using FCP 7 and recently purchased a panasonic ag hmc 152 camera. I can Log and capture and edit without any issues. I use the prores 422 as my capture and sequence settings, burning to a blu ray disc looks awesome. However making a dvd looks really really bad. My footage has jagged blocks on the edges and I would be red faced to show anyone. as I mentioned before the bluray looks great but as we all know some clients like dvd still. Any advice awould be greatly appreciated.

You didn’t list your step taken to create a SD DVD…

[Chris Tompkins] “You didn’t list your step taken to create a SD DVD…”

Nor did he mention if he was monitoring that SD footage on an SD TV?
trying to match the BR on the same display would be BAD.very bad.

If you search “sd from hd” you should see lots of suggestions how to do what you want.

    Hi Chris

I have done the following. From the FCP menu > Share > Create DVD
I have also Export as QT movie current settings then imported in to compressor then in to DVD Studio.
I have also Export as QT Movie and changed it to a H.264 then in to compressor then DVD Studio
(which looked the best out all of them) but took about 8 hours for a 30 minute dvd. I have also done send to compressor with the worst results. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Gary

I Played the footage from a dvd player on a Panasonic plasma, I played the dvd on to CRT monitor and a LCD portable DVD player. The footage looks bad no matter what I use. The same footage on Edius 5 to DVD looks ok. It’s only from FCP I have a problem and I would say I’m doing something wrong for it to look so bad. Even in the preview in compressor looks really bad.

If making an h264 then going into DVDSP looked better, then clearly you are doing something wrong. You do know that DVD needs mpeg2 from Compressor and that Compressor has very good presets to make m2v files from a quicktime.I suspect you are going through a horrible and unnecessary transcoding.

If you are exporting a quicktime using current settings and your timeline is correctly setup, then you should be able to make a decent DVD. But what we need to know is the details of the codecs used in the various steps.

You mention ProRes for the camera originals. What are the sequence settings, and the settings used in Compressor.

    Hi Michael

For my capture settings in log and transfer AVCHD plug in is set to ProRes 422
    for my sequence Apple pro res 422 1440 X 1080 50i 48 khz

When I insert a clip in the time line FCP change sequence to match clip settings?
I tried yes and No with the same results

in compressor I’m using the dvd mpeg2 best quality 90 mins and leave it as is I don’t play around with the settings.

I’M sure your write I doing something wrong but I searched just about everywhere it find out what

May Be I should ask what should my Sequence settings be in FCP 7 for AVCHD?
