Importing Mpeg2
Hello,
I’m trying to import some video footage shot with a Panasonic SDR-H18 camcorder that is in mpeg2 format. I’ve tried to import directly into AE7 and I receive the “cannot open movie because it has no duration” error. I have purchased the Mpeg2 player for Quicktime Pro which said could convert the mpeg2 video into other formats. When I converted the mpeg2 into a .mov file, I still received the same error on import. I usually have no problem importing .mov files. Any ideas? Should I be converting mpeg2 files to some other format? -

I thought the QT MPEG2 plug just allowed you to view MPEG2. Hm.
You should convert the MPEG2 movie to a QT MOV codec such as Photo-JPEG or Animation.
I think I used “MPEG Streamclip” the last time I had to do that.

.mov is a container format. Like .avi it does not define a codec, but contains the video information in an encoded form (any codec supported by QT can work in an .mov) as well as other metadata.
You should try transcoding your video to something with only intraframe compression (I frames) like Photo JPEG at max quality.

I believe you are correct sir, although I am able to transcode MPEG-2 files straight out of QT Player. I have QT Pro and Final Cut Studio though, which may install some extra whizzy stuff.

Ah. Yes.
There is no use in converting the MPEG-2 to a MOV if the MOV still uses MPEG-2 as its codec.
