[FCP 7 ] Edit in Full HD or in actual target format?
Hallo ti everybody,
I’ve realized a Doc in Full HD (1080i) and now I have to edit it.
Actually, target format is for DVD SD issue , therefore I’m going to chose a DV PAL format 16:9 (with letterbox to preserve Aspect ratio), and maybe a 720p (HD ready) version for a Blueray DVD.
But in future, I’d like to propose my work in Full HD like have I filmed and – in the same time – I’d like to preserve an editing copy in the same original full resolution.My question: what is better?
Better is edit in a Full HD 1080i Sequence (in FCP7) and than export in any format i want (by FCP or Compression)?
or better is make a single Sequence (in FCP7) with ACTUALLY target format, to manage better CPU and RAM resources, but with risk to make all once again… for a new different format ?

IMHO, I’d keep the project in HD. Export a Quicktime with Current Settings (not Using QT Conversion) when the edit is locked. Then it’s easy to turn that into any format you want: SD for DVD, h.264, flv, Blu-ray, etc. You future-proof yourself this way.

good, and wht do ypu prefer than have you export the clip (in Current Setting … FULL HD)?
Do you utilize Compressor or directly FCP?THX!

When you export like John suggested, you have your native file in the HD settings according to your timeline. From there you can pull it into Compressor and down covert to your SD MPEG2 files for DVD or your run it through Compressor to burn to Blu Ray, etc.

I edit in the original file’s codec or ProRes depending on how it was shot. I export the edit codec (current settings). I use Compressor a lot, but I also use Sorenson Squeeze and BitVice. I never use FCP to export other than a QuickTime with Current Settings (which is what I think you mean by full HD).

Stay HD. Even if you wanted to edit SD never use DV codec and never letterbox. If you do you will be throwing away the maximum quality.
Search this forum for the workflow to go from HD to SD. Basically John has nailed it but lots of posts on this topic will give you some ideas on settings within Compressor.
