  .SCC works in DVDSP but not in FCP7?

  I posted this in the Closed Captioning Forum but got no response so I’m double-posting it here as well.

  I got a .scc file from a company in Jersey that does closed captioning. If I add it to FCP7 during Print to Video, it will hang the program up forcing me to Quit out if it. (Spinning beach ball) If I use the same file in DVD Studio Pro and burn a DVD, it works fine. I have an existing .scc test file from the same company, used in a different project, and it works just fine in FCP7 when doing a print to video.
  I guess that all .scc files aren’t the same. Any insights into this one?

  Don’t know if it can hang FCP, but you need to have a zero based file.
  (Meaning, in the file the start TC of the (virtual) first caption should be 00:00:00:00, no matter your tape/timeline TC.

  Open it with a text editor (don’t save it!, make a copy!).
  You can’t read the text, but you can see the TC’s.

  If the first caption is not a low number, ask the company for an altered file.
  (or, do that anyways 🙂

  Yep, the file they sent is starting at 00:00:00:00.
  Oddly, the file that works starts a minute and thirteen in.

  They have sent numerous version of this file the last few days and nothing except the test file they sent works. Every single new file will hang the system. I sent the file to another editor I know that is running FCP7 and it seemed to work on his system. He doesn’t have a CC decoder, but at least it didn’t hang his system.I’ve tried all the usual. Trashing preferences, repairing permissions, etc. Even ran Disk Warrior on the boot drive. Nothing seems to make any difference. The old file works and the new one won’t. It works in DVDSP as well. Probably some “Got-Cha” involved here…

  Can’t help you here then…

  But if the first caption is indeed 00:00:00:00, it is wrong.
  CC relies on buffering first, then display.
  So the first caption must start later than 00:00:00:00

  Perhaps your problem lies there?

  (this is WILD guessing!)

  Make a copy, remove the first entry from the .SCC (using SimpleText)
  see if it works then.
