Monitoring Scratch Narration
I prefer capturing scratch narration to a bin rather than to a timeline so I use the Log and Capture tool rather than the Voiceover tool. I’ve got a USB mic I plug straight in to my Mac and off I go. But is there a way, via headphones, to monitor audio while recording? Without a deck running, the Preview button under the Audio portion of the Clip Settings tab in the L&C tool is grayed out.
Could I monitor if I had a deck hooked up?

Might I make a suggestion?
Create a new blank Sequence solely for recording your VO’s using the VO Tool.
After recording, drag all those clips into the bin of your choice.
You can monitor the audio using headphones by simply selecting that option in the VO tool.
This is a LOT easier than using the Log and Capture tool and you achieve the same goal, putting all your clips into a bin for use in your project.

Sorry, I swear, I’m looking in the online manual first.
How do I monitor though? I’ve got headphones plugged into my Mac’s headphone jack and I’ve got the Headphones Volume control on the VO tool all the way up, but nothing comes through my cans. I hear the countdown beeps through my speakers, then nothing. If I switch the Output setting in my System Settings from Line Out to Headphones I hear the countdown beeps through my headphones and then nothing when it starts recording. Levels read on the mic fine and the audio is recorded when I check it after.

I once recorded narration into FCP using the Log & Capture (uncontrolled device) and i had no problem monitoring. I was using a Decklink card and the audio looped through the card output without any problems. Not sure how you have your monitoring setup.
There is also the option of using Sound Track pro to record narration, especially if you wanted to record to picture.

Yeah, I couldn’t manage to find a way to monitor audio that way either.

I typically monitor audio through the Built-in Line Output running to analog speakers. For narration, the app, wisely mutes the speakers to avoid feedback. I would like to monitor the narration through headphones, but perhaps I need more equipment than I have to do so. I’m having a hard time getting a clear answer. The Headphones Volume control in the VO tool would make me think there’s a way to do it.

I’m really just trying to collect the scratch narration first and then cut it in. I often grab a line quickly and move on so I’d prefer (if possible) to do it without leaving FCP.

I think the issue is using the onboard audio rather than an I/O card like Decklink/Matrox/Kona. Perhaps there is something in the system preference setup for the onboard sound so it doesn’t mute when using a mic.
