Compressing HD for Webstreaming
I have shot a video on HDV (Canon XLH1) and cut it on Final Cut 6. Now I am trying to compress for webstreaming while maintaining as much of the image quality as possible. Does anyone have any advice as to what settings I should use when exporting Using Compressor (3)? When I compress using H.264 webstreaming the 16×9 was stretched vertically to 4×3. I figured out how to correct that by adjusting the pixel dimension, but the quality of the compressed video is horrendous, both in its softness and color desaturation.
The video is about 4mins, and I have to keep it under 100mb and keep the quality as good as possible.
So, a couple of questions, so I don’t ramble too much:
1) Recomedations for settings to preserve quality? (I see really great-looking HD videos online all the time, but can’t figure out how to keep mine looking good)
2) Which is better Mp4 or H.264…or is there something else? (for things like Youtube, Vimeo, Casting network, etc.)
I’v ebeen racking my brain with this and it’s making me crazy. Please somebody help me.

OK, here is what I use in Compressor 3.5 and it works great! First I choose the Youtube preset and set the following settings.
1. In the inspector click the encoder tab and set file format to Quicktime movie.
2. Under video settings set Compression Type to H.264, frame rate Current, Key frame every 30 frames, check frame reordering, Compressor Quality = high, Encoding best quality (multi pass), data rate to automatic.
3 Under Frame Controls tab set frame controls on, resize filter better, output fields to progressive, deinterlace to better, check mark in Adaptive Details.I have used this on many 1080 60i projects and it makes a 720p file that looks great on Youtube. Hope this helps.
