Major FCP 7 issues.
So I am sure someone out there has experienced this and I was wondering what their take on it is. I should say that I come from a primarily AVID background though I know FCP pretty well its just the company I work for run a FCP Shop. I have noticed that FCP 7 is very buggy and crashes constantly. But now I am getting error messages like “out of memory” which is simply not possible for the project I am working on. I should also state that we are running 2×2.93 quad cores with 32gb of ram.
I have also started getting the hilarious “The codec you are trying to use is unsporting by your current hardware as you lack the proper hardwear card for the codec.” Which would be fine if that codec was not APPLE PRO RES 422, which I just find mind boggling.But the point of this is that I am trying to export a render of a project that two days ago I was able to and now I am not able to as it just fails. My concern on the on the low end is it just FCP and it needs to be reinstalled. On the high end the project file is screwed and I have to tell a client in London that you will not be able to take delivery of the outputs until sometime next week as we completely have to redo the edit.
Any thoughts on this?

FCP 7 is the most stable of all the releases to date if it was installed correctly. This means the internal Mac HD was erased and a full, clean install of the OS and the Studio package was installed. If the OS and / or FCP was simply “updated” then you’re in for a world of hurt.
In my case, I updated from FCP 6 to FCP 7 in the middle of a feature documentary with over 100 hours of original footage. It went smoothly. We have 5 workstations now running FCP 7 here with a crash maybe once a month, once every two months.

it was installed correctly as we just got these two computers a month a go. they are completely speced out top of the line Mac Pros with 2×2.93 quads 32 gigs of ram NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB (we are waiting on the 1 gig cards to arrive) We should not be having these type of issues. And it is interesting that you say you have not had a problem with it as you seem to be in the minority. Everyone I talk to about this and even the shop I worked in before I came here had a lot of problems with it.

Not really. It’s been out well over a year, all the folks I know cutting for broadcast and feature work are having excellent results with the software.
Folks with major issues usually do not install it correctly or they have poor media array setups. If that shop is having problems with it, there is definitely something wrong with the setup somewhere. If you’re certain everything was installed and updated correctly, then the next guess is something is wrong in the media array setup.
We run only ATI cards here as they have much better performance with Apple Color.

Here’s an idea, Ski…
Open your project, just as you would normally. Copy EVERYTING in your browser and paste this into a new project with the same settings as the one you are currently working on. Sometime a project will become corrupted and cause these issues. I’ve seen it a few times in the past. The mysterious project corruption…
Try it and see if it helps. Also, reset your preferences in FCP. This will help, too.

This usually has to do with movies or sequences in ProRes that aren’t standard video rasters. Also, still frames that are CMYK and not RGB or over a 4K raster will throw this error.

You’ll probably get people more likely to help you if you don’t jump into the Final Cut forum and start bashing the software it’s dedicated to.
I’m from an AVID shop as well editing full time on FCP and I’ve found it “tweaky”. There are so many settings that if you don’t know what you are doing can make final cut run poorly.
As Walter said, there are major houses and tons of people using FCP…so people are having successes.
The fact that you aren’t means you need to either pay someone to come in and setup these machines for you, or patiently troubleshoot with the help of people like Jeremy, Shane and Walter (and several others) who have helped me a ton in troubleshooting my issues in transition from a PC and AVID.

Try backing off the RAM. Try it with just 2 sticks in. Our shop has 10 systems on 7 for about 6 months now and we’ve not had any problems.

That’s a good point, especially if the RAM did not all come from the same place. We had 10GB RAM in one of our systems for a while and it was flaky. Backed it down to 8GB and it ran perfectly smooth.

I am not bashing final cut and I apologize if it sounds as if I am I am just have a very matter of fact way of speaking which I realize, if I am not in your esteem can be taken the wrong way. I am also quite stressed out about a deadline that I will be unable to meet on a project that has been a comedy of errors at pretty much everly level. Add in technology problems that were installed by a professional and you can see my overall frustration.

Also the “Out of Memory” message pops up when FCP is trying to render a file that exceeds 4K pixel width. Like most error messages on all systems, it doesn’t tell you anything useful.
Try searching this forum as well. The error messages you have seen have been reported and commented on here before, usually with the explanation and work around explained as well.
