  • Using mixed footage in single timeline?

    Hi there,

I am trying to edit footage from a Canon 7D and JVC in the same timeline. The 7D is encoded with h.264 and the JVC is XDCAM I think (this is the compressor that FCP is using when I look in the sequence settings menu).

If I import the footage and get FCP to adapt the settings to match the 7D footage then when I import the JVC footage it is unrendered’. Similarly, if I use the JVC settings then the 7D footage comes up as ‘unrendered’. If I have footage from both cameras side by side on the timeline and I select h.264 compression in the project settings then the 7D footage can be viewed but the JVC remains unrendered and visa virsa.

How can I get both bits of footage in the timeline where neither need to be rendered. How can I use two different compressions in the same timeline?

    Thanks!

#1 – Do not edit the footage from the Canon 7D natively. H.264 is NOT an editing codec. It is preocessor intensive, and REALLY bogs down the machine.

#2 – do not convert it to XDCAM…that is a highly compressed format of it’s own.

Best to convert the 7D footage to ProRes…either with the Canon EOS Log and Transfer plugin, or by using MPEG STREAMCLIP or Compressor. But I like the plugin because it brings in TIMECODE and a REEL NUMBER. HUGELY important things.

Then work in a ProRes timeline. Yes, you will have to render the JVC footage, but really not until the end. You can work with it fine in a ProRes timeline.
