  Flickering transitions after export

  I have several videos edited in Apple Intermediate Codec (because I only have Final Cut Express) that are basically of a talking head and slides. All the slide transitions are just basic 1-second dip to color dissolves. When I export to H.264 format at 480×270 or 854×480 resolution, they play smoothly. But when I export to 1280×720 or 1920×1080 resolution, I get flashes of white and flickering in the transitions. The slides (which are Quicktime movies made in Keynote) also sometimes flicker, even when there’s no motion. If I export without Quicktime conversion, there’s no flickering.

  Aside from taking the source video to a production house, is there something I can try to correct for the flickering? Here are my settings:

  Source video resolution: 1920 x 1080
  Compression Type: H.264
  Frame Rate: 29.97 fps (same as source)
  Key Frames: Automatic
  Frame Reordering: Yes
  Data Rate: Automatic
  Quality: High
  Encoding: Best quality (multi-pass)

  I’m also applying a Brightness & Contrast filter on the way out.

  I’m doing this on a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo. Is it a limitation of my processor that can’t handle the amount of data being encoded? I know it’s not a playback issue because if I take the converted flickering file and reconvert to a smaller size, it still flickers (whereas converting to a small size from the source file creates a smooth file).
