Editing with JPEGS
I am trying to create a short video with voiceover using mostly all stills and using Final Cut Pro. Full disclosure I am a newbie and don’t have much editing experience. I am using jpegs. What is the best way to deal with the photo sizes? Will all the vertical photos have a black borders on the side? And even the horizontal pictures have black on the top and bottom.
I don’t want to enlarge each picture because so much quality is lost.
My sequence settings are set to 720 x 480 frame size and the aspect ratio is set at NTSC DV (3:2)
This will ultimately be exported to dvd for playback on TV monitor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can import other kind of uncompressed stills (PNG, TIFF, TG..), FC will be more happy than with JPEGs.[Vicky Bernal] “What is the best way to deal with the photo sizes? Bring the stills big enough so you don’t have to enlarge them in FC.
In Photoshop you have presets for video.
Chose the one according with your sequence setting.

if the jpegs are high quality they should be fine.
make them as close to D1 resolution as possible though
so final cut doesn’t have to resize them much. -
Also, don’t use DV if you can avoid it. DCVPro50, ProRes 422LT, or 8-bit Uncompressed will all give better results than DV. Keep your pix at 72 dpi and you can size them up in PhotoShop if you like, but keep either side under 2000 pixels. Usually double your frame size is enough for most moves. And make sure if you position them that the still’s center point’s y-axis is an even number in the Motion Tab of the Viewer. If they will just be pix that sit still, the do as Chris suggests and size the pix to fit the pixel dimensions of the codec you’re using.
