HD FCP timeline to SD DVD – DVD won’t play
Hi all –
I know that HD to SD DVDs is covered pretty extensively on forums, but I’m having a problem I can’t find answer for.
I export my HD FCP timeline using Apple ProRess 422 (HQ). I then go through Compressor and use the SD DVD settings to export the m2v and aac files. I then import the m2v and aac files into DVDSP to build the DVD.
When I test the DVD, it plays fine on my computer but not my set top or another computer. Also, when I look at the m2v file in Finder, it looks sort of transparent – like when you see the icon for a file before it’s finished rendering.
The project has a pretty involved menu structure, so I can’t use Toast to make the DVD.
Workflow issue? Settings issue? Tired and irritated because I can’t make this work issue?

Well, if DVDSP builds the Disc and it plays on the comp then there is nothing wrong with the files. Compressor is doing the correct job for you. I would look @ the media u r using for ur discs and compatibility with the DVD players

ProResHQ is overkill and can cause issues in some situations. Export a self-contained Quicktime using Current Settings. Drag that to Compressor and use one of the Best settings presets. Don’t push the data rate settings beyond the preset. If you do that you can experience playback issues. I’ve never had a DVD not play on a set-top box. However, even doing everything properly you will find some computers won’t play your DVD. I’ve had situations where it works fine on one client’s machine, but his co-worker can’t play the same DVD. There’s been a lot of discussions over the years about that, but no answers I’ve seen.

Pretty sure you made an HD DVD by mistake. Does a HVDVD_TS show up in your build location? If so, go back and change your preferences to SD and re-author.
