Instead of Spotlight
Posted by Martin Nelson on May 27, 2010 at 5:03 pmI understand, from here and elsewhere, that I should isolate my media drives from Apple’s Spotlight. Is there a third-party app I can use in lieu of Spotlight to track down files on these drives, but not yet in Final Cut. I’m essentially looking for a desktop search tool that doesn’t conflict with the app.

What?
Configuring Macs for FCS does not require a whole heck of a lot of tinkering. You seem to be over-thinking this whole thing. If you’ve finally got your computer working again, just get on with the creative part of your work. Honestly, this isn’t rocket science.

May 27, 2010 at 6:00 pmThere’s just no reason to do it. When computers were slower it might have been useful, now it’s just not important.

May 27, 2010 at 6:03 pmWell, thanks David, nothing would make me happier that to go back to the creative part of my job, but in getting everything running again, new issues have arisen. Without making this one of my usual long responses, I often need to find a file that isn’t in the project, but is somewhere on my 7 TB of media drives. If I can’t use Spotlight (which, again, I’ve been told here and elsewhere I shouldn’t) how do I go about searching this huge haystack for my clip?
And, yes, better organization would have helped, but I inherited the existing organization.

Warren, as a test, I just copied the name of a file from one of the media drives that have Privacy on in Spotlight. I then went to the desktop and and used CMD F and pasted in the name. Didn’t find it.

May 27, 2010 at 6:20 pmWhy turn off Spotlight? Let Spotlight index the 7TBs on your drive, then you should be good to go. It might take a while the first time, but then you’re all good.

May 27, 2010 at 6:21 pmWorks for me. Did you select “file name” not “content” and also tell it to search the media drive?

May 27, 2010 at 6:24 pm‘Why turn off Spotlight?”
Because several sources (I’ll try to find and post them later) have said that Spotlight creates conflicts with FCP. I’ve been fighting major issues and, having finally gotten back up and running, hate to chance it.

I have never heard of that, perhaps it was in really early versions of Leopard.

Do tell. Major issues?
Is this 7TB on a fast raid?
