I am doing some effects for a MOW that was shot on DVCPRO HD on P2
cards at 23.98. I just brought a clip into AE and spit it out with a
sample effect done. Coming in AE and Quicktime tell me that the codec
is DVCPRO HD 720p60. Rendering out using the same codec results in a
huge gamma shift. The shot is all washed out.

I checked the colour flags on the source material… Rec 709 and the
rendered movie, also Rec 709. I expected a wrong flag but that was
not the issue. I tried removing third party codecs such as microcosm,
Flip4mac, etc, etc, as I have sometimes had codec clashes in the past.

Anyone else experiencing these sorts of issues. I’m running AE 7 with
    Kona 3.

THe short answer is to let Final Cut Pro do the YUV to RGB conversion: rener out an Animation codec clip and bring that in to AE. Also, Uncompressed seems to work fine in AE.

The problem lies in Quicktime (and may be fixed in 7.2, but I have yet to unleash that on my system…)

I’m not using a Kona 3 card, but I’ve been successful telling my editor to export out of his FCP timeline (quicktime movie using current settings, which are DVCPROHD 720p24), then:
I import those clips into After Effects.
    Go to File–>Project Settings
Check the box that reads “Match Legacy After Effects Quicktime Gamma Adjustments”

Then I do my thing in AE. Render out at DVCPROHD (but animation has worked just as well here for me, your choice) Give the clip to my editor.

I had the same “washed out” gamma shift (and people went from looking warm-toned to sunburnt), but since I checked off the Match Legacy settings the clips I give him are absolutely seamless.

I thought I had tried that option and it didn’t fix my issue. I guess I’ll have to take a look at it again!
