unfurling movie reel
Hi guys,
A complete and utter newbie to the forum. It’s fantastic. I don’t feel alone anymore. I got into this about 1 year ago as an attempt at a complete career change. So hopefully, with you guys on my side, it will go well and i will be able to finally do wha t i love. Anyway, enough smushiness. I hope somebody can help me with something. I need to do a 3d logo to impress my 1st ever client (yes) and i’ve figured out how to do everything else except this. He has a movie reel as part of his logo, and i need to animate it to unfurl (unwind) and for the film cells to show “STUDIOS”. I hope i’m saying this right, but if there is anyway i can make it clearer, please let me know. I thought about creating a cylinder in invigorator, creating a texture in photoshop and then somehow wind it round the cylinder, but that’s where i fall flat. HELP anybody. Thanks -

well cc cylinder will wrap a flat layer (film strip texture) around a cylinder, but you won’t be able to unwrap it from the reel. i think you will need to do that with another flat film strip and use a track matte to hide the flat strip where it joins the strip on the reel as it unwinds
did that make sense?
the tricky part will be matching the rate for the two separate film strips. but if the strips were the same length, when the reel spins 360 degrees the other strip would move it entire length… so if the film needs to be 200 pixels to reveal ‘studios,’ but the rel needed a strip that was 400 pixels, then the film wrap rotation would be 180 degrees and the flat film move would the 200 px. well it should at least get you in the ball park.

Thanks. That’s really helpful. The thing is, i was thinking of modelling the cylinder for the reel in invigorator or cinema 4d. I’m not sure if i will be able to use the cyclinder cc effect with this format. What do you think?

you can do the film reel and unfurling of the film in c4d, pretty easily. for the film, just create the shape that you need, jsut a flat ribbon like shape, it won’t actually move so it shoul be pretty simple. then animate the film texture along the ribbon shape.
if you were to use cc cylinder, you could would render the front (a setting in the effect) and place that on the reel… depending on the perspective of the reel, it may need to be two halves, one below the film and one above in the layer order.

Well, I got as far as re-creating this film strip with my own images, but now I’ve been pulling my hair out for weeks, trying to modify the animation to where it runs in a continuous loop with NO interruption in the actual strip (where it doesn’t come in from the top, every time the movie starts over, but rather keeps “circling”).
Any ideas on how this could be achieved here?If it’s absolutely necessary, I could probably go with the effect from this tutorial https://library.creativecow.net/articles/bobotis_chris/filmstrip.php
but the “wavy” strip looks so much nicer. So if anyone could maybe give me a hint, on how to achieve the continuous loop for the “wavy” filmstrip, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
