Transferring files to Premiere on PC
I recently finished a program on FCP7 that originated on HDV/1080i. The client now wants copies of the original camera masters. They are running Premiere Pro on a PC. I’m not sure what version they are using. How do I get them this material?
I wanted to just put it all on a firewire drive but they wont be able to read a Mac-formattted drive, will they? I could just put this footage on a SATA drive but I’ll have the same problem. I’m thinking I put a firewire drive on another PC on my network and just transfer the footage to that drive. Any other ideas?
Also will they have any trouble reading the FCP7 HDV files I give them when they open them in Premiere?

Yes but client does not have access to HDV playback equipment.

Yes, they will. That codec they are captured too is only viewable if you have FCP. Or a third party decoder.

Shane’s Stock Answer #48 – Cannot view DVCPRO HD, HDV or ProRes QT files on your computer.
The DVCPRO HD, HDV and ProRes codecs only comes with FCP. If your computer does not have FCP installed, it cannot view these quicktime files. It doesn’t matter if it is a Mac or PC, without FCP installed, you cannot view these files.
If you need to view ProRes material, you can download the ProRes decoder (mac and windows compatible) for ProRes

If your footage was captured as DVCRO HD you can buy the Calibrated DVCPRO HD decoder:

If you have MXF files from a P2 camera and you need to view the footage on a computer without FCP, you can download P2CMS from Panasonic:

Or you need the other party to compress the footage into a format your computer can play, like H.264.

They can get MacDrive and read your drives no problem.
Shane is right about FCP HDV – it’s only if you have FCP.
Shane and I may respectfully disagree about needing the ProRes decoder. We chatted on it once before and it’s unclear, but my belief is that the ProRes decoder is in later versions of Quicktime 7 for PC.My suggestion is to convert the material to ProRes and give it to your client that way. Premiere Pro can playback ProRes material in CS3 and above (Mac or PC). With the latest version of CS5, the performance on ProRes should be very good.
