What is now the best equipment to use for tapeless recording?
Hi all…I am just getting started with FCP and getting ready for first shoot planned for HDV720P (from JVC HD100) and finishing in FCP….. I need to determine the best rental option for tapeless acquisition…. I’ve noticed a few posts on the AJA KiPro and it looks like it’s available for rental at VER and several other places….
Can I take firewire directly out of the camera HDV/720P to the KiPro?
Can anyone give me advice on best approach?… not a big budget but really want to avoid tape… thanks so much… scott

Without discussion, the Ki-Pro allows more quality than the NANO (10b 422 vs 8b 422).
However think that the Ki-Pro won’t allow the portability of the NANO. THE NANO is just like a piece of the camera. The Ki-Pro is not for ENG like shooting. Power is another issue.

Wow, thanks so much guys…I should have explained before that this is a studio shoot and so portability is not essential…
Any idea what the KiPRO rents for? I’ve sent an inquiry to VER and also have a friend at Video West in Phoenix I may check with…
Any idea whether there is any issue recording the JVC HDV/720P firewire output? …and will that allow me to use all audio channels?

Hi Scott,
The Ki-Pro is great to record from the SDI out (10b Uncompress) of any camera, by passing the on camera compression.
The FireWire out HDV, so very compressed.
I think you have no much clear what you want to do and what you need.
The Ki-Pro is something for real high end production, however the camera you gonna use is not.
I would recommend you to try to balance your gear.
Get a better camera. About the Ki-Pro go with it if you intend to finish in 35mm or so.
Is better a good picture with some compression that a weak, uncompressed picture.

The AJA Ki Pro will take the component analogue from the JVC HD100. It doesn’t take firewire. It will take SDI from the JVC HD250.
There is a dedicated Firestore DR HD100 for the JVC that works seamlessly with the camera and records to tape at the same time. It’s HDV though and the Ki Pro will give you ProRes from the camera head via component out.

The nano flash looks like a interesting little device. I would be interested to hear how well it works with the 5DMKII using the hdmi. This way you could bypass the 5DMKII recording to h.264.

If it would be possible to record the HDMI out of any DSRL, the people of ConvergentDesign would be selling thousands of NANOS.
The manufacturers have been very careful protecting the HDMI out.
What you get from the HDMI is good enough for monitoring, but is not standard.
Thousand of people praying every night for the people of Magic Lantern to crack it. No way.
If it would be possible, I would buy tomorrow a Canon to use it with my NANO.

Thanks thats good to know. Hot having a 5D MK II yet i haven’t had a chance to try the hdmi out.

The KiPro also takes HDMI in so if your camera outputs HDMI you could use that too.
