Have you set the import location in XDCam import preferences?

Basic instructions for using XDCAM Transfer:

You can also use Sony’s XDCAM Transfer Tool as a stand alone app. Here’s how to do the initial set up. Start the program and go to preferences. There, you’re presented with 3 tabs:

    • general
    • cache
    • import

Choose “Import” and in the text field for “Import Location” type in the name of the folder on your external hard drive you want your XDCAM EX .mov files to reside. After you’ve typed the location in then click on “choose.”

Now every time you import from the cards the converted files will go to that folder. Then it’s just a simple matter of starting FCP and importing those clips into the program. They’ll appear in the Browser window.

Follow these steps for using XDCAM Transfer Tool within FCP:

Start FCP and from the File menu choose: Import>Sony XDCAM. The XDCAM Transfer Tool will start automatically and you can use it the same way as you do when it’s a stand-alone app. The difference here is that once you’ve gotten to the point where you choose “Import” in the XDCAM Window the files will be converted, imported into the perviously chosen XDCAM folder but will also appear on FCP’s Browser automatically.

I was able to successfully transfer media from an SxS card but not so with files on an external hard drive. I even tried to transfer files back to an SxS card to no avail. Kept telling me there were zero files.

    Hey Dennis

Both Sony’s XDCAM Transfer and FCP’s Log and Transfer require the source media to be contained within a valid folder structure. Sound’s like the source footage you have on that hard drive may be raw media itself rather than the whole kit and caboodle.

If you have a budget for this job, and fear this gaffe may become the norm rather than an exception, then you might want to check out Calibrated Software’s awesome MP4-EX Import component:

    Hope it helps

Always copy the complete BPAV folder onto your hard drive. Do not take out anything, otherwise the file and transfer will not work.

    Dennis,

Sorry to be late to the party.

I would recommend updating your software. The latest version of Clip Browser is 2.6 and XDCAM Transfer is now on version 2.12.

Incidentally, XDCAM Transfer does now work with MP4 files that have been pulled out of the BPAV file structure, although its better to keep it intact if you can.
