Compressor and Canon 5D mk II
Hello there guys,
The question is “How do you make compressor export without putting an extension on the end such as “-AppleProRes_422” in a batch without going through one by one?
The full story is below:
I’m starting a short next week which is currently being shot on the Canon 5D mk II. I am doing tests to work out the best workflow. I’m in the UK and so they are shooting at 25fps thanks to the new firmware.
So this is what I’m planning:
- I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of rushes so I was going to transcode the h264 to dvpal for offline.
- I was also going to transcode the h264 to prores 422
- Then after the offline is complete I was going to relink to the prores
*I understand that if I have enough HD space that editing from the prores 422 or maybe prores LT is perfectly fine.
Reconnecting to files with a different name is fine if you’re ok with doing it one by one. I’m not really.
Suggestions?

Set a Custom Destination. The Destinations tab is right next to the Settings tab.

Do not transcode to DV PAL. You’re better off transcoding to ProRes Proxy, keeping the same frame size and aspect ratio.

Thank you all for your helpful tips!
I’ve not tried editing from proxies before (always been worried about doing that). In this case, I would still need to transcode from h264 to prores 422 and then create proxies aswell. So I can relink in final cut back to the prores 422 for final output?

For the record, I have not had any problems cutting 25fps ProRes 422 1920 x 1080 off FW 800 drives. With drives so cheap, for me I see no point in doing anything but making the originals HD ProRes422 and cutting with those files.
DV is the only PAL codec that is lower field and that is a real nuisance in an offline/online workflow. Just avoid it and enjoy watching decent HD pics when you edit. It will help particularly spotting soft focus which is an issue with a large pickup camera like the 5D. In DV you will not see something that is just off focus.
