If I put a Kona 3 card into a Mac Pro tower what are my options for the rare occasion that I may need to capture analog video through a composite input? As far as I can tell from the Kona specs, it will output analog composite, but not input.

The Kona 3 does not have any analog input. If you need input from an analog source, you will need an A to D converter. AJA makes a variety of mini an rack mount converters, as does Black Magic Designs.

    Thanks Arnie for confirming that.

I would suggest that you look at the Kona LHi. It’s capable of such work as well as high-end HD work.

    Thanks Wayne.

The reason I want to go the Kona 3 route is for possible work with Red 2K projects. The LHi seems to stop at 1080 or am I wrong? I’m already looking at one AJA mini-convertor to convert SDI for a HP Dreamcolor monitor for grading but that’s another discussion.

[Lee Warner] “The reason I want to go the Kona 3 route is for possible work with Red 2K projects.”

Well… That can throw a wrench into things.

You are correct in your assumption. You’ll have to purchase the Kona3 if you plan on working with RED footage and then having to purchase a mini-converter to convert your analog to SDI. AJA makes plenty of those to choose from also.

Another option is to get the AJA Io, they are on ebay all the time. I got one from there almost new for $500. The Io will input analog via firewire.

We have both an IO and Kona. All analog in/out goes between the two using sdi. This is particularly useful for uprezing sd to hd.
