  • Render Problem – Green flickering artifacts

Posted by Dan Shott on March 25, 2010 at 8:21 pm

    Hey everyone,

We’re seeing random artifacts showing up in some of our Final Cut Pro renders. It appears as a flickering green bar at the bottom of the frame. If you kill the render file the green flickering bar goes away, but it’s time consuming to have to watch through everything looking for the problem and there’s always the worry of missing some on outputs.

My initial thought would be that it has something to do with the fact that we’re using the SD Apple ProRes 422 codec for the footage as they only other time I’ve seen this happen was also on a ProRes show (we normal work in DVCPRO HD, DV, or 8-bit uncompressed)

It appears to happen mostly (possibly exclusively) on shots that are sped up or slowed down.

Here is an example of what we’re seeing https://vimeo.com/10441342

Info on our setups: Problem seems to be showing up on Intel and Power PC machines, all machines running Leopard with FCP 6.0.6, capture settings for footage is AJA Kona LH: 525 29.97 Apple ProRes 422, seeing it in multiple bays

Any suggestions on cause/solution would be greatly appreciated!

We’re using Apple ProRes 422 for everything.

Our editors will fully render out a show then we in the assist bay will take their sequence and export it for viewing, ftps, dvd, etc. The renders are used in the making of the quicktime so we don’t have to rerender the show for output.

the normal process for this would be to render out a Quicktime MOV
I know that if you use h264 you can get some green banding under certain circumstances.

Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.
