Forced rerender when exporting to quicktime
I want to export a self-contained quicktime movie at current settings from an HDV timeline. The movie is 86 minutes. As soon as I select export quicktime from the menu, about 75% of the clips in the timeline are unrendered. Since this is a render heavy movie, rendering it all takes 20+ hours. If I try to export the timeline unrendered like this, I get an “out of memory” message, which I assume is a RAM limitation (I have 4gb ram). I tried trashing my preferences and my render cache, re-rendering everything in the current project, but the same thing happens: as soon as I click export (in other words, I’m looking at the export pop-up menu), 75% of the clips become un-rendered. Note that this doesn’t happen if I try to export an individual clip, that works fine.
I can export small bits of the film like that (1-3 minutes), but that takes forever and makes 30-50 bits of movie! Any suggestions?

“Out of memory” often is an indication of bad media. It could be video clip or, say, a jpeg that’s too large. Checkout Digital Rebellion’s FCS Maintenance Pack with the Corrupt Clip Finder.
Or, you can try exporting different portions of your seq to see if you can isolate which portion is causing the issue. Start with the 1st half of the seq. If it’s good try the 2nd half. If it’s bad the try 1/2 of that bad portion and then the other half if the 1st is good. Keep going until you find the bad media.

Hi John, thanks for your help. That maintenance pack looks very helpful. However I’m still wondering why my rendered timeline is unrendered when I try to export a quicktime movie. Is that normal? I’m assuming that if the timeline isn’t rendered the export will take far longer than it would if it was rendered, which makes isolating the problem in the way you describe very time consuming.

Having clips become unrendered when you try to export is not normal. You are right that if you have unrendered clips when you export, FCP will render them. However, after the export, the clips in the seq will still be unrendered (that’s normal). Rendering the clips first, before export, is the correct workflow.
BTW, did you repair permissions after trashing your prefs? Also, if you have Disk Warrior, I’d run it. The directory could be corrupt so clips suddenly become unlinked or missing. DW could fix that. So might repairing permissions. If you run DW, repair permissions after DW finishes.

Yeah, I don’t want to export unrendered cause that doesn’t work currently, and any way would probably take a day at least. So yes, I have rendered everything and then if I attempt to export: 75% is now unrendered. So I want to know specifically why that is happening. Are you suggesting it is doing that because of the permissions, or because clips are corrupt and will render fine but when you export they de-link or go missing? If so great I will try to fix those things. I’m pretty ignorant about this stuff.

Are you exporting a quicktime movie or quicktime conversion? I have seen the same unrender characteristic when doing a quicktime conversion.

Ok, I repaired permissions and couldn’t find any corrupt clips. I realize now that the clips that become unrendered when I try to export are all smoothcam clips. So something about those clips is causing a problem when trying to export. I’ll have to do more research on it but it doesn’t look good.

Ok, no one’s reading this now but maybe it will help someone later on! I’m just guessing but is it possible the render problem comes up because the smooth cam clips were all rendered on a separate time line? Smoothcam is a rather mysterious filter and so for instance if you render one smooth cam clip on a timeline with other, unrelated smooth cam clips, those others are often then unrendered. So what I (and others) do is take individual clips and render them on a separate time line. Then you don’t have to re-render other clips (unless they are linked to bits of material on the timeline where you rendered!). But so maybe this creates a problem when you try to export the whole rendered timeline. Maybe you have to render everything together on the timeline, otherwise Final Cut will force you to do that when you try to export the whole timeline. I’m grasping at straws here! I wish I could find out because troubleshooting with an 86 minute timeline is a gigantic headache involving day-long renders!

There is not relation between Permissions and corrupted files.
