  Working with HDV, Pro Ress 422 or BlackMagic JPEG

  Hello again,

  I’m recording a shoot today with 3 different cameras for different angles that I will sync in post production. I know this is a long and tedious process, but it’s what I have right now to work with so I’ve decided to go for it. I don’t want to be stuck in a post production nightmare so I am looking for the best route to take.

  I have two cameras recording real time to Final Cut Pro. One camera(CAM 1) is going to my Mac Pro via HDMI cable to a Black Magic Instensity Pro card. Another camera (CAM 2) is going via firewire to my MacBook Pro . The 3rd camera will record to it’s own hard drive for import later. (AVCHD camera CAM3).

  I’ve noticed that recording to HDV format is the smallest file size, and I can do that with CAM 1 and CAM 2. I’ve seen recomendations to use Black Magic JPEG buty I can only record with CAM 1 to that format.

  I was thinking of recording CAM1 to Pro Res 422, and CAM1 to HDV (only option via firewire), and then importing footage that I want from CAM3 as Pro res 422.

  CAn anyone give me feedback on if this is going to be a problem when I go to edit in FCPro 6 or if they have any better ideas with what I have.

  I believe you can record ProRes 422 from HDV via firewire. Chris Poisson wrote a tutorial here at the Cow a while ago that outlines this procedure. At the same time, I would record to tape as a backup.

  Given the mixed formats, if you can standardise on ProRes 422 that will give you the cleanest post workflow.
