Hi guys I know you are probably fed up with these questions, Im just wondering currently I have a Mac G5 2x 3ghz quad core intel xeon with 8gb memory and 4tb hardrive and 2 x 23inch monitors. Its great but I keep thinking how much better life would be to be able to edit on the move so am thinking of getting a mac pro not sure what spec for fcp 7. My only fear is if I get mac book pro would my g5 go to waste and just collect cobwebs, or would you say hang on to it as it will or would it out perform a high spec macbook pro?

    any advice would be great

    Cheers

    Hi, Jay

I think you need to clear up some confusion, before you’ll get a straight answer.

    Are you sure you have a G5? I don’t recall there ever being a 2 x 3 Ghz quad G5. (I thought G5’s stopped at a single quad 2.5.)

To run FCP 7 you’ll need MacPro with an Intel processor. (None of the G5’s had Intel processors.)

On the other hand, if you do have a 3 Ghz eight core, then you already have MacPro and you should be good to go.

    Hi, Jason

    Thanks for clearing that up.

It’s apples and oranges, really. If you must edit on the go, then get the MacBook Pro. But if you’re staying put, a tricked out MacPro tower will outperform the MacBook Pro: eight cores vs. two, capacity for much more RAM (up to 32 GB), graphics card with onboard VRAM will permit you to use Motion and, of course, the bigger desktop with your two monitor set up.

    It won’t gather cobwebs.

    Good luck!

lol, thanks for that, I wont sell it then, I just get worried that it wont be long before the computer will be outdated and not fit for purpose so quickly that Ill be stuck with it, but the fact that I can keep updating internals I guess it will last longer than macbook pro which is limited to updating. I only just past my fcp 6 exam and month later fcp7 gets released, I cant keep up with it all lol.
