HDV settings for Final Cut Pro
Posted by Erin L. fitzgerald on March 15, 2010 at 5:01 pmHi,
I have a Sony HDV deck and I have been logging SD footage no problem recently, and have logged HDV successfully in the past but just once. Now, even though I wrote down the settings I used, trying to log some HDV 1080i footage, FCP just won’t do it. The Sony deck recognizes it as an HDV1080i tape, so I’m not confused about how this particular tape was shot. Anyway, when I try to log and capture, I get the response: Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly.
Well, device is definitely connected, because I can put in a SD tape, change my settings accordingly, and the sucker logs and captures no problem.
Here are the HDV settings I’m trying to use:
Sequence Preset: HDV 1080i60
Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire (I have also tried Sony HD Firewire to no avail)
Video Playback: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview – Main
Audio Playback: Built-in OutputCan anyone help me?
Thanks!

March 15, 2010 at 5:21 pmHi Erin!
Try using your easy setup in Final Cut Pro
Choose –> HDV1080i60
Also be sure that your camera menu settings aren’t down converting your HDV footage to DV

March 15, 2010 at 5:33 pmThank you for answering. I wish it was that easy. I went to easy setup as you suggested. Response I got after setting up as you indicated: “unable to locate the following external devices: HDV (1440X1080) 60i”
Again, have been regularly logging SD with this deck and when I put in the HDV tape, it recognizes tape as HDV.
Wasn’t sure what you meant by make sure your camera settings aren’t converting HDV to SD. I’m not logging with the camera. I’m logging with a sony SD/HDV deck. Do you mean that it might have been shot and downconverted because of settings in the camera when shooting? Then wouldn’t the deck recognize it as SD instead of HDV?
Thanks much!

March 15, 2010 at 5:42 pmI read once that when logging HDV from a deck you should disconnect all other firewire items…I have a couple of external hard drives plugged into the same computer. Is this at all a possibility, or just an old wives (read: IT guy’s) tale? but if this were true, why would I still be able to capture SD with the same setup? Musing.

March 15, 2010 at 5:47 pmYOu also need to set the deck up to output HDV. They have internal settings for outputting DV, and switchable to HDV. make sure that it is switched to HDV.

March 15, 2010 at 6:39 pmShane is correct.
If you are using a deck make sure it is setup to output HDV. It could have been left on output DV…hence FCP giving the error message “unable to locate the following external devices: HDV (1440X1080) 60i”
because FCP is isn’t detecting HDV.

March 15, 2010 at 8:21 pmIf none of the previous suggestions work try this. Put an HDV tape in the deck, hit play (make sure the playback is of footage and not of an unrecorded portion of the tape), launch FCP and choose the appropriate HDV setup. What I found to be pretty common is that since the HDV decks can send out both HDV and DV signals it’s not always clear to FCP which signal is being sent out.
We do a lot of HDV capture via FW where I’m at and we’ve run into this so often the playing the tape back in the deck before launching FCP has almost become standard operating procedure.

March 31, 2010 at 7:23 pmI’m sorry I didn’t respond sooner to all of your excellent answers, but want to say thanks a million. Andrew, your play the tape first idea worked like a charm. Thanks so much for the help, it saved me hours of headache, something I can’t afford to have on my busy schedule. And to everyone, thanks for the tips, I learned from them, you all rock!

April 8, 2010 at 8:20 pmHelp! I’m having the same problem with FCP not reading my HDV device, but only I’m not using a deck, I’m using my Sony HDR-FX7 to capture the footage. I’ve got it to where it’ll capture the footage if I set the capture preset to HDV-apple intermediate codec, but I dont want to use that setting b/c I know that it will create larger files. It also captures the footage if I set it to DV-NTSC, but I know for a fact it was shot with the HDV setting and not DV.
Some help please! Thanks!

March 5, 2012 at 9:55 pmMr Andrew… I was just about ready to BLOW MY BRAINS Out!… Until I read Your Brilliant little TIP here on dealing with HDV Footage and Final Cut Pro…
I laughed to myself and said… “This could NOT be true… This does not make sense!”… But, what the hell I figured… I turned the deck on… placed the HDV Tape into the deck… Pushed PLAY… and then I fired up Final Cut Pro… and I Could NOT Believe MY EYES… The Capture window Initialized the deck when opening and I was ready to Rock & Roll!
I spent a WEEK… So fully FRUSTRATED over this issue… (I have never edited ANY HD or HDV Footage before… But I have been editing SD Footage since 3/4 Decks were still in use!)
THANK YOU… THANK YOU… THANK YOU!!!!!
Why the hell doesn’t Final Cut Pro mention this Anywhere?… Why doesn’t Sony Mention this Anywhere???????
This is a HUGE TIP for first time users of HD and HDV footage working with Final Cut Pro…
Thank you again Sir,
Sincerely… Craig Amabello
