Ok im making a movie in which at the end there is an epic battle between and good guy and a bad guy. The bad guy is going to be wearing black robes and for the effect we wanted the robes to be dissolving off the whole time yet not getting smaller. I kno thats very unclear but you cann see it in Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix in the scene when the death eaters are chasing the kids for the prophecy. The robes look like there falling of but they dont get any smaller.
Here is a clip but it could be taken off youtbe soon and its dark and hard to see the robes as is.

but if you know what im talking about I would love to hear your ideas or suggestions on how to create this effect.

Was a bit hard to see from the video but maybe you could try using Trapcode Particular?

    Hi,

Regarding the suggestion to use Trapcode Particular, would it be possible to use the particle generator to create particles spreading out from the cloak as a displacement map layer and then use that to distort the image to create the effect of the fabric constantly flowing out and away? Particular allows you to use a layer as a particle generator so this would not be difficult if you shot the black cloaked character against a greenscreen or if you want to do a rough roto-mask.

    Hope this helps,

    Lars

It was a little difficult to see, however, for any photo-realistic cloth effect, I wold say you need to go to a cloth simulator on a 3d application. I have yet to see anything produced in after effects (or any other compositing program) that is really at par.

    > an epic battle between and good guy and a bad guy. The bad guy is going to be wearing black robes and for the effect we wanted the robes to be dissolving off the whole time yet not getting smaller. < Before we get all worked up and start recommending you go out and buy lots of supplemental plugins like Trapcode, let's start with some basics: How do you plan to attach this simulated "robe"of yours to the frenetically moving actor? The task gets progressively more complicated as you add camera angles, slow motion, wizard sparklies, magical lightning, fog, interactive shadows, wand residue and eye of newt. If you can figure out that part and explain it to us, making the robe dissolve into syrup or turn into black deathshead butterflies or mouldering corpse dust is going to seem very easy. > I kno thats very unclear < You have no idea. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
