  • Searching for Movie Data in File

    Hi,

I’ve got a project (DV/DVCPRO -NTSC) which seems to be having a lot of issues. When opening the project it gets to around 31-35% at which point it starts ‘Searching for Movie Data in File “Mu_Veloria_99.mov”‘ which seems to almost loop over the same 10 or so files before eventually going past them. It also does this with one .aiff file, so it’s not just video!

    So far I’ve;
    – Checked to see if they’re QT Reference files and even used the Save As… feature in QTX saving in a different location, and relinking to the new file without any success.
    – Exported all of the sequences as XMLs and opened them individually.
    – Used newer versions of FCP (6.0.4>6.0.6>7.0.1)
    – Cleared all renders using Render Manager.
    – Used FCS Maintenance Launcher to test the project and QTs for corruption.

The only thing I can now think of it that it’s relating to the HDDs. The suite is out on dry hire see, and the client has 3x 2TB Lacie external HDDs plugged in via FW800 as well as a 500GB G-Raid Mini. They have 4 years of footage so it’s not as though they can move it all to one drive – And they’re paying a massively discounted rate so I’m not interested in setting up a full RAID solution for them.

Only upon unplugging the HDD with the majority of the footage, does it boot without the ‘Searching…’ feature of death. This will also sometimes occur mid-edit and relink and loop over the same clips for 5 or so minutes. They claim it worked fine on their machine when running with the external HDDs.

    Any ideas… anyone!?!

    Cheers,
    Jack Jones

You seem to have covered a lot of bases. Is there any chance that there is a quicktime movie in the project that was made from a couple of clips, was not self contained and the some of the original media has been deleted including and aif?

Have you searched for the movie file that it hangs on and opened it in Quicktime to see if it misbehaves there or just plays a bit of the file?

Opened it up in Quicktime and scanned through the files and they all work fine! All of the clips are locatable and all play with out an issue in Quicktime X and 7. Looking within the Cmd+J at the resources tab in QT7 they all only reference the file that they are.

Really rather stumped on this one. Google hasn’t saved me this time! Neither has CC’s search which is an even rarer feat!!

I seem to get the same error popping up. It didn’t use to kill the project, now the whole thing crashes.

Jack I was having the exact same… maddening problem.

I tried everything, including a new install.

In the end, somehow it was the FCP project file. Which is weird, because I had also gone back to earlier versions and they gave me the same problems.

I was able to open the project for long enough to export an XML of my main timeline. Then, I created a completely new FCP project and imported the xml. Works perfectly now.

I have found that this problem occurs when I have deleted a source file or .mov file from my computer which I was using previously in FCP, and no longer require. The link is present within FCP but the file is of course now gone.

Delete any items that are not required or have a red line running thru them, save FCP, and restart.

The error message will go away.
