  • Please help! Pixelated still images in FCP

    Hi,

Sorry to ask this but I am relatively new to using FCP and would like some advice…

I have read all of the posts on the forum (and many others), I have also spent the last 8hours searching the internet, I’ve tried as much as possible but am still having problems.

I am making a video with still images and voiceover using FCP 5.1.4. I am going to show the video on a 50inch LCD TV through a DVD player.

I have around 300 images (all jpeg around 2539 x 3425 in size. When I import these directly into FCP I have found that the image quality is fine in the viewer but is extremely pixelated in the canvas.

I have tried re-sizing (various sizes eg 1024 x 576) these images and changing to .tif, I’ve also tried using all different compressors in the sequence settings, I can’t seem to find anything that will help.

Also I am aware that I am viewing this on my Imac monitor and that viewing on a LCD screen may vary, but I really do think the pixelation is severe…

does anyone have any advice please?

Maybe a silly question, but have you rendered your timeline?

I used to have this problem with stills, but it wast because I didn’t render. What color is the bar over the clips in your timeline?

Wow! Thanks for the quick reply…

originally the line above the clip in the timeline was green and rendering didn’t appear to make any difference.

The lines above the clips now are red and turn a dull blue after rendering. (again, doesn’t seem to alter the image).

I apologise, I have tried so many different things today that I can’t remember what action caused the line to start being red instead of green. I think it could have been changing sequence compressor settings (now on HDV1080i50)

Besides rendering also keep in mind that your 2539 x 3425 source images are getting compressed down to 720×480 and some hefty DV compression (I’m just assuming you are working in an SD TV timeline). The reason they look fine in the Viewer but not so fine in the Canvas is that in the Viewer you see the files in their native format but in the Canvas you see the files after they’ve been compressed by the settings in the timeline.

That’s a good point…what are your sequence settings? And are you mixing the stills with video? If so, what type of video?

I won’t be mixing the stills with any video…

    Aspect Ratio: HD1440x1080(16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440×1080)
    Compressor: DVCPRO HD1080:50
    Motion filtering quality: best

I’m not sure if this is the right way to do it, the render lines above the clips are now green again.

    thanks for your help
