Plug-in for that “video interference” look?
Is there a FCP plug-in that gives a video signal interference look that I’ve seen being used in tv spots like the Droid phone and the Wrigley’s 5 gum. Here’s a sample at the opening and closing of this commercial spot:

I do most of my effects work in After Effects before finishing in FCP so I’m not sure if there are FCP versions of these, but DigiEffects has one called Video Malfunction and Foundry Tinderbox has one called Bad TV … they’re both good.

Thanks for your input. I haven’t jumped into After Effects yet, but it seems like I’ve been needing to do that anyway. Thanks for the leads.

Check your standard final cut effects. There’s one called Bad Video I think. If nit it’s a freebie out there. Before that I just used the generate noise generator and overlaid that with blurs, color distortions, video distortions, etc. Sometimes it’s faster just to do it vs searching the Internet for a plug. But in this case I think bad video is in FCP.

Just to clarify, I wasn’t necessarily suggesting that you should do your effects, etc. in After Effects instead of FCP … just stating that’s what I do, but that’s because I’ve been using that workflow long before FCP existed and it fits my particular needs … you should do what works for your situation.
And, I’d certainly recommend trying the free plugin options before investing in expensive third-party plugin sets … again, that depends on each individual editor’s situation.

Thanks. I didn’t mean to make it sound like I was going to run out and invest all that time and learning just for this. I was still going to try the plug-in route. I guess I was just thinking out loud that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have more effects tools at my disposal (including making better use of the Motion I already own!!). I certainly didn’t want to make you feel like you were telling me to invest all that time and energy. Sorry about that. And thanks!

Thanks. I guess I should have specified, I have FCP v6.
I couldn’t find a stand alone filter.
Version6 came with some trial filters from CoreMelt and Noise Industries (that I need to purchase to remove the watermark). CoreMelt has a “glitch” filter and a few others that may be combined.

No worries at all, Anthony … I just wanted to clarify because the downside of short answers is that those answers can sometimes be a little misleading. Personally, I’m a big proponent of expanding one’s skill set and After Effects is a great tool … however, it can require a significant time investment depending on how well you want or need to learn it so, in my opinion, whether it’s worth the time boils down to the types of work you do and how much of it you do.
