    I’m doing a project where one side of the screen is displaying a powerpoint graphic, the other side is displaying video of a presenter. The source footage is DV 30p. The video has been scaled in the motion tab to an even 50%. I’ve also made sure to place it on even pixels in the center field (e.g. -138, -88). I’ve gone in to my sequence settings and have tried just about everything there. Setting the Quicktime Video settings to native DV/NTSC progressive, etc. I’ve set them to proress 422(HQ), uncompressed 8 bit. I’ve gone in to the video processing tab and set motion filtering quality to best, and have also checked Render all YUV material in high-precision.

    my video looks great when displayed full screen, but when I resize to 50% it starts to look interlaced. And not only interlaced, but almost like fields are getting messed up. you can see in the picture below in his face and collar region the best. it’s hard to tell on the picture how bad it is. there are horizontal steps through the whole frame. Hopefully someone can tell me why it would do this on video that has been scaled and not on video that was full screen. Again, I’ve got all my render settings, at best quality.

    Also, this may not matter, but when I change my settings in sequence settings to best quality motion rendering, etc. before render it looks and plays at great quality in my split screen window, but after render is when it looks bad. This may not actually mean anything, but thought I’d throw it out there.

    My final product will be on DVD.

    You have to judge quality externally on a video monitor for starters. Is that what you are doing?

    Thanks for the response. Yes, I’m viewing on an external monitor. However, my main test has been to export small chunks and compress for DVD, then build the DVD and view that on my computer as the primary way the product will be viewed is on a computer. I understand that the DVD will be up-ressed when viewing it this way, but everything looks reasonably good except for the scaled video. the video looks fine if it’s full screen, but when scaling to 50 percent and making sure I’m centered on even pixels and all that it looks terrible. like the fields aren’t rendering properly. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help.

    I’ve a couple of ideas.

    1: be sure that the Motion Filtering Quality is set to the highest setting (It’s in your sequence’s settings, just select the sequence in your Browser and type cmd+zero to open it’s settings)

    2. Since it’s going to be seen on a computer, you might try deinterlacing these… try one and see if it doesn’t look better on your computer’s display.

    1. I found that early on, and it was set to normal, I thought setting it to best would solve my problem. It didn’t help at all. I even set the option above that Render all YUV at high precision. I didn’t figure it would do anything given my source footage, but thought it couldn’t hurt.

    2. I think I tried this, but I’ve tried so much I can’t remember anymore. I’ll try this and get back. I think I tried it and it had basically no effect.

    I did change the field order from to lower first to none. It helped slightly on the video that is scaled to 50%, but hurt the video that was 100%. Actually, both looked pretty similar, but they both were degraded somewhat, and it definitely looked more like an interlacing issue, which it should.

    my source footage is DV 30P, which I assumed meant that I should set field order to none, but in reading up on this actually found out that even though it’s progressive it is still lower field. So that’s where I ended up. my video is set to lower field first, and best motion filtering. the video at 100% looks great, the video at 50% looks terrible.

    My next step also is to go view other video that I’ve scaled down and see what the settings are on it as I don’t believe I’ve ever run into this problem before.

    I am having similar problems rendering a split screen sequence on FCP. I tried different sequence formats and it also looks good –until I rendere them and they come out blurry. Have you found a solution? Any guidance would be appreciated!

    Match the sequence setting to the source properties of your video, then try turning on the highest quality render setting in the motion filtering found in that sequence’s settings. Scaling in FCP isn’t the best, but this might make it acceptable. Also helps to use whole numbers in the Motion tab’s parameter settings. Then judge it externally on a video monitor.
