Basic Timeline Edit Question – FCP7
Hey – me the Avid Editor learning FCP again. =)
Specs: MAC Leopard / FCP 7 / Mac Pro (tower)
Question: On an Avid timeline I’m used to being able to put and edit and replace/lift/trim content on just the video layer or the audio layer. However in my Final Cut timeline it makes me edit video and audio together – like they are all locked together. I also can’t highlight just the audio or video track.
Can anyone show me mercy and open my eyes to FCP’s method? THANKS!

You need to turn off LINKED SELECTION. There are two buttons on the upper left of the timeline, the one on the left that looks like the infiniti sign, or two links in a chain…click that to turn it off.

Also remember to use the auto select buttons instead of the track target buttons (as you would on avid) for edit operations (such as lift) within the timeline. The auto select buttons are the tiny buttons to the right of the targeting buttons, which are used only for editing from the viewer (source) to the timeline.

Shift-L is the keyboard shortcut to turn on/off Linked Selection.

Thanks guys! This helps…I feel a bit handicapped right now. Used to be a FAST editor. Now I feel like a slug crawling into a fog.

If you option select the clip it will select the specific clip you click on. I’ve found safer and faster than turning off linking.

oh nice…i like the sound of that.
i’m trying to make final cut’s timeline work like avid…which means many keyboard short cuts and this constant segment mode stuff is not cool. ARGH.

big mistake. I love Avid (on a Symphony DX right now,actually) but you need to let go. These are two different beasts. FCP is a good editor, but it’s a terrible Avid. You will like it a lot better if you learn how it does things and how a different approach can have advantages. You might even learn to appreciate a non modal interface.
