I’m having some trouble capturing the video off of my Sony Digital8 (quite an old camera) into Final Cut 7 (Academic). When I preview the video the image is much, much darker than it is on the LCD of my camera. My current settings are Firewire NTSC (device control) and DV NTSC 48kHz Anamorphic (Capture/Input). Please help! I was also having this problem before I upgraded to Final Cut 7 (previously used Final Cut Express 3). I bought a new firewire cable in case that was the problem. No change.

Oh one another thing, in the past I used the same camera and Final Cut Express 3 and everything worked fine. This darkness issue only started a year ago or so (it didn’t matter to me because I was using another camera at the time and didn’t need the old footage, but now I do).

Do you have any other devices connected to the FW port? If so, disconnect them and see if that makes a difference. While you can usually daisy chain drives, adding a camera (and other devices) will often cause problems. Even though the Mac has multiple FW ports, it only has one controller for all of them, which is why it can be “confused” by multiple devices. If that doesn’t help, have you tried the 3-way color corrector to lighten the clips?

Hey thanks for the feedback. The only other thing I have connected to the computer is an external hard drive. I could try connecting up without that, perhaps it would help. Are you referring to color correction in Final Cut or the color correction program? I tried correction in Final Cut Express 3 and it didn’t look very good but I haven’t tried with the new color correction program I now have. Still it will be a real hassle to have to correct all of these clips. I’d much rather fix the import problem.

I have found many posts about the darker imports in FCE, but no solutions. What is the issue, and how can I get full quality on my video inputs into FCE? I’m using version 4.0.1.
