Cropping / zooming with RED ONE Footage in Final Cut Pro
Cropping / zooming with RED ONE Footage in Final Cut Pro. I thought the beauty of the RED ONE (one of the benefits) was that when you where missing a close up, you could zoom with final cut pro. And becasue of the high resolution; it was shot in 4k, you would not lose quality. How do I do my final render? I need to convert my edit workflow, which is a small frame size to a 2k finished product. I know you can’t get 2k on DVD, but I need to view my project in 2k. And my sending this to DVD Studio, I would thenk the output would be great quality without artifacts and my zoom / crop would be back to the resolution it should be.

What sort of zoom ratio are you using? Regardless of frame size, you will lose some quality zooming in on any frame, relative to the frames around it. When you go back down to SD resolution, that should be very difficult to see starting from 4k.
But are you zooming the 4k file and then making a new QT file of the zoom? Or are you just zooming the 2K files?

I am zooming in the timeline and Im editing with the proxies the _P FILES. I am not sure how I render my final project. I want to out put to at least half quality or the _H files. My frame size is set pretty small due to a duo core processor. Hoping to upgrade to at least a quadcore Mac in the future. Just not sure how. I am still learning this workflow as I have only been using FCP about 9 months. How do I output to connect to the _H files or the _F files?

I think you should go back to basics and study the RED work flow in FCP. There are very helpful pdf’s at the RED web site and searching the COW will throw up lots of advice.
Editing _p proxies is not a recommended work flow. Zooming them will look ordinary too.

The whole project is cut. Run time is 1:38:27 So I can’t undo what I been working on all this time. How can I point to the higher res quicktime files? I know Red Creates 4 files with the _P being the smallest, lowest RES. I am ready to do my final render.

Send your project to Color. This will open up a project where you are working with the original R3D files. Set your project settings to 2K and then all of the zooms can be added without quality loss. From there you can begin grading your project, which would be madness not to do when you’ve gone to the trouble of shooting on the Red to begin with.
There are MANY caveats to this simplified explanation, which is why people hire online editors and colourists who have done all this before and know the pitfalls and the ways to get the best results.
Finishing your project by simply connecting to the _H or _F proxies is possible, but the results will be poor compared to a conform with R3D files.
One final recommendation is to buy Noah Kadner’s book on the Red. It covers exactly the workflow you’re using and will demystify a huge amount of the technical process (the creative process is down to the operators!). Honestly, a priceless investment.

Alex, sorry to bother you again, but I am on a short time table right now. I know my project shot on the RED ONE needs color correction, but that will have to wait just for now. I would not be the one to preform color grading as well. I need to save this project to 2K asap. I have sent it to color, without attempting any correction. In order to get the highest quality can you walk me through the process of bringing my project to a 2k finish? I rendered most of the clips in color, only because I assumed I need to, But again no correction. Just need to finish it to 2k and don’t know how to find the settings.
I am hoping to get the project accepted for a film festival. Hopefully I can get it color timed before the premiere.Thank you for your time and expertise.
