  • Sudden preview disabled in log and capture

Posted by Josephine Mackay on February 4, 2010 at 7:03 pm

    Hello,

I was happily capturing away in Log and Capture and then I put in a new tape and suddenly I got the Preview Disabled message on the bars although I can still control the camera through Log and Capture, it just doesn’t play the video. At the bottom of the screen is says VTR OK. I can hear and see the video playing on my camera (which I am using as a deck). Audio and video are both checked in my clip settings. And the other tapes (miniDV) have captured fine. Any suggestions?

    Many thanks!

    Josephine

Does it behave OK with other tapes? Just a specific one is giving you problems? If so, and this tape plays OK in the camera, try dubbing the tape via firewire to another tape. (will take two cameras or a camera and deck to do this of course).

Thank you Jerry. Yes, it’s only this specific tape that is giving me trouble. I have now set up the two cameras (the PD-150 as well as an older smaller Sony). I cannot dub via firewire as you suggest because one end of the firewire cable is too large to fit the DV/in/out on the other camera. I imagine there is an adaptor for this purpose? In any case, I have tried with an RCA to mini-jack cable (no luck) and with the S-video cable and the red and white RCAs for the sound (not working either). I have both cameras in VCR mode. Any further suggestions? Thanks again, Josephine

I’m sure there’s a cable or adapter which will work for the FW dub. Also sure it should dub OK if it plays OK in one of the cameras. Try connecting the video output of the camera it plays in OK to a monitor or TV set to be sure the signal is going out OK. If it is, then there’s likely an input select you need to set in the camera which will do the recording from the camera that plays it OK.

Thanks for following up, Richard. No, the issue has not been solved, but I am still working on it…The signal does not seem to be going out from the camera that the tape plays on. This tape was not shot at the same time as the others and I am wondering if perhaps it is a PAL tape, or maybe it’s corrupt. In any case, next time I go to the city I will take it to a post facility to see if they can dub it or at least diagnose it…Cheers! Josephine

I am wondering if it is the Cable as well. I will be checking that out and let you know if the problem is solved, cheers, Richard.

No, it’s not the cable as I tested it with another tape and it works fine…I’ll let you know what the post facility says. Cheers! Jo

    Hi,

Did anyone find a solution for this problem? Sorry in advance; I dont have it either, I have the same/similar problem.

I’ve been capturing mini dv tapes without any problems for ages with a Sony HDV1080i videodeck for DVCam and HD/DV mini tapes. All of the sudden, the video didnt display anymore but just gave the Preview Disabled screen. Connection is fine (VTR OK) cables attached and I can even hear audio playback.

I’ve also tried to connect a camera (Sony PD150, old I know) and I see the footage on the camera but during capturing it gives the same problem as with the Sony Deck. If I go ahead and try to capture anyway, FCP says ‘unable to capture as there is no video’

I’ve tried everything, playback setting, capture presets but they’re the same as allways what worked perfectly fine..

    Any help? Thanks
