Any pro jog/shuttle knobs?
Can anyone recommend a good jog/shuttle knob for FCP? The only thing I can easily find are the Contours (which are too flimsy and light for my tastes).

I know what you mean about the Contour, I have one, and it performs OK, but I’m used to the weighted jogger on linear systems like CMX, Sony, and the Contour took a while to get used to. The Euphonix costs a lot more than the Contour, but if your used to a ‘real’ jogger, it might be worth it.

I have the contour but stopped using it. FCP is the problem. It implements jog by +- 1 frame keystrokes. So the jog is just like hitting the arrow keys. It is clunky as hell so don’t blame the jog wheel.

That doesn’t really seem very fair Michael, since version 5 there has been built-in support in FCP for transport control via protocols such as Mackie Control Protocol. It is Contour / Bella / JL Coper etc who have not implemented the use of these protocols with their keystroke sending controllers. Yes, the clunkiness is due to the keystroke sending nature of the devices, but no it is not FCP’s problem per se.

Fair enough Andy. I wasn’t aware that FCP allowed proper jogging via USB devices.
So does the Mackie have smooth audio jogging and doesn’t overshoot?

Hmm, well I’m not aware of any specific control surfaces supported by FCP that connect via USB. The Euphonix devices connect via ethernet I believe, Tascam via firewire, the Mackie MCU … not sure.

Good point. As far as I know the audio jogging via these devices is handled no differently than the usual FCP transport controls (ie not subframe) … am guessing this is what you must have meant by +/- frame intervals/

Correct, no overshoot.
Disclaimer. I don’t use one of these devices, I happily use the keyboard in FCP for all transport control.
