  • Multiple layers with one mask?

Posted by Attack-hands on August 10, 2007 at 3:07 pm

I am working on a scene as shown below. The characters within the scene (the lifeboat, pilot and whales) are constructed with multiple parts (arms legs fins etc) and all the layers have to be in the main comp for animation. I need to mask the characters off where the bright green mask indicates. But I dont want it to effect the layers below it (the sea, land and Sky).

I do not have the option of pre-comping the characters into thier own layer and masking them in there. Is there a way I can set the mask so that it acts sort of like a “sillouette alpha” but not on ALL the layers below it in the timeline.

Here is the Image (hope that was some what clear)

Hey cheers for that. I put the effect on but it doesnt seem to be doing anything. Ive looked it up in the ae. help files but I’m no clearer. What settings should i be using and how do I tell the matte not to mask out certain layers

Here is a screencap of my Timeline (hopefully it will make things a bit more clear). Reminder I have to do this without precomping any layers into the one layer.

I understand your issues with precomping the 3D layers. But your matte should be precomp-able. No?

Well, for Set Matte to work, the Matte layer has to be precomped if it was created within the same composition as the fill layers. Fill layers are those that use the matte.
