  • Digitizing HD footage using Canon HV20

Posted by Jessica Buritica on January 18, 2010 at 5:19 am

Im working with FCP 6.0.5. trying to digitize HD footage recorded with a Canon HV20 Camera. Im trying to digitize using the camera with a Firewire 400 cable. Using Device control DVCPRO HD FIREWIRE and Capture settings set to DVCPRO HD 1080i60.

I changed Camera setting AV-DV to ON. was able to get a ‘VTR OK’ signal on my FCP Log and Capture screen, Also able to control camera playback wtih FCP. Not able to obtain a video preview however, and whether I log a clip first or do Capture NOW…the camera plays back but nothing records on FCP. nor does anything appear on screen.

Any troubleshooting suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Never used that camera but a 2 second search tells me that it shots HDV

You cannot capture HDV footage using DVCPRO HD Settings using firewire.

Ether select the appropriate HDV capture settings or capture via prores.

DVCPRO HD FIREWIRE, for some strange reason, was the only preset that was giving me control over the camera playback. All the others set me back to no communication. Could that have been FCP getting glitchy?

Trash your FCP preferences, repair permissions and restart.

    also-

sometimes you have to close and relaunch FCP, depending when you connected your camera.

Also ensure the tape was actually shot HDV not DV.

[Jessica Buritica] “I changed Camera setting AV-DV to ON”
I believe by doing this you are down converting the signal coming out of the camera to DV instead of sending out HDV. This would explain why the DVCPro HD Easy Setup allows you to control the camera because DV and DVCPro HD use the same deck control protocol.
