Audio format – question
I have a miniDV video that I edited in FCP. I had it mixed, and I received it back and laid it down in my FCP. Then I exported to a DVD in stereo. But what is the audio format that I have? How can I find out? What is a Dolby format? Can I have it in dolby? I know those questions are really silly to have, but I just don’t know the answers to it. Thanks. I also posted this in audio. Not sure where to get a response. Thanks again.

Please explain your workflow so we can help. List all the steps you took to arrive at your DVD. Are you asking what format the audio is on the DVD, or before it’s encoded for inclusion on the DVD?

I have the audio from my FCP exported as dual stereo. I am creating a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. The audio setting on FCP is 48 khz / 16-bit.

I’m still not sure what you’re asking, but I’ll take a crack at it. When you have your clip in FCP you can export it in many ways. Using QuickTime Conversion you can export audio as aiff. If it’s stereo in FCP it will be stereo when exported.
You can either use the aiff audio in DVDSP or a better approach is to first convert the aiff to ac3 (Dolby) in Compressor. However, be sure to search for how to do that (I know it’s covered in the DVDSP forum) as the basic preset in Compressor has to be adjusted. It’s best to use ac3 in DBDs as it’s only 192 kbps compared to the aiff which is approx. 1500 kbps which takes up more space on the DVD and is harder for the DVD player to playback.
