Hi Gang, I am editing a project that has clips from a movie where my client has permission to use them. In the DV Animorphic (DV Widescreen) time line obviously the film aspect is way off (It’s square pixel). I adjusted the distortion settings and scaled it just enough to look fine. So in the timeline every thing looks OK.

But when transitions are previewed, the video is jumping up/down as if it’s switching between resolutions or something. Then on output the film clips are appearing wider than they do in the time line (I guess square pixel is stretching). I know enough to understand that there two competing sizes in play, but thought by adjusting with distortion should has resolved it. Since it looks fine when previewed (other than the transition seizures).

Any help is much and graciously appreciated.

I guess maybe the best question is how to convert a 720×404 / square pixel file to look correct in a 720×480 / CCIR-601 (DV Widescreen) timeline?

If you scroll over toward the right in the FCP browser, you will notice a column header titled “Anamorphic.” Put a check mark there for each clip, then edit as normal.

Thanks much. But if the video looks correct and fine with the settings now, why would everything look great in the time line and yet export wide in some sections (where the film clips are)?

I think I misread your post initially.

If I were you, I would drop one of the film clip into a new timeline and allow FCP to match the settings to the media, and see what it does.

However, in theory, you should be able to drop the material on the timeline and then scale without changing the distort parameter.
