  • Can’t sync multi-cam project.

I did a bit of searching in other posts to find answers but couldn’t. Hopefully I can explain… and I have all info.

It’s a syncing problem – 3 cam shoot, but problem (so far) with just two cams. 2-XL2s and 1-DVX100. Both 24p, 16-bit audio. Now, dvx is NDF and I had no problem importing. XL2 was also NDF, I THINK. If the browser columns reflect the source material and not capture settings then yes – NDF. I did have continuous timecode breaks during import. I have some clips captured, but there were too many breaks. I tried different capture settings, but still TC breaks. I decided to import using non-controllable device and it worked, but without the same TC, but in NDF also.
Oh, and the DVX has audio running from a board. I’m pretty sure same bit rate. It is in sync with the it’s (dvx) footage.

Now, the problem is when I try to sync the dvx to the XL2 footage it falls out of sync after a few mins. I tried syncing with both the XL2 NDF footage (what I had between the TC breaks) and with the non-control capture footage. I used drum sticks for an audio and visual…(ish) slate. Its a drum video.
I also tried to sync using the Multicam feature.

Questions are – 1. Can anyone tell me reasons for not being able to sync and what can I do.
    2. Do browser columns reflect source footage.
    3. Does the TC even matter to sync if using audio and visual? if not, what’s the problem?
    4. If I am wrong with cams having same set-ups could frame rate prevent sync and how to fix that.

Would a audio sync program like “Pluraleyes” be a good idea? I just don’t want to invest if its not going to work.

    WAH!

    I appreciate any help!

are you saving that the cameras were stopped and restarted throughout the video and then you captured the tape in one solid clip? If you did these have to be captured as separate clips.

What is the frame rate of the DVX clips and the XL2 clips? Frame has to be the same on all the clips. You said you shot 24p so are you editing on a 29.97 timeline?

Pluraleyes would work if in fact the framerate is the same and the clips are broken up between stops and starts.

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for the reply. Tapes recorded with no cuts. However, if I continue having the TC breaks while capturing from the one XL2 then there will be multiple clips for that one.
Yes, all clips are same rate and editing on a 29.97 timeline, but shot 24p. If the XL2’s were in 24p (2:3:3:2) mode and the DVX in normal 24p could that cause problems. Is there a way to tell the frame rate of the source material on fcp. The browser columns just says 29.97 from the capture, is that correct.

So pluraleyes wouldn’t work if the tapes are continuously rolling with no cuts. What if some captured footage had dropped frames? would that create new clips?

    Free run timecode?

If so, please log and capture properly instead of trying to rip in a whole tape at one time.

Yes free run, but start times were all different.

Why can’t I ingest whole tape? What is the proper way? Batch?

You can’t ingest a whole tape due to the tc breaks. You need to log around them then do a batch capture. You will then get proper timecode.

I tried to do that, but even the (what I thought) were clean clips don’t sync. Could it not be a TC problem?

    Grady –

    Are you saying that

    1) the clips jump out of sync at specific points.

    or

    2) when played against each other they start in sync and then they slowly drift apart.

If it’s #1 there are many work arounds. If it’s #2 then you have real problems.

I believe it gradually falls out of sync. Its hard to tell because it happens so quickly. Only after about ten seconds. Maybe my I’m syncing poorly the sticks and sound, but…
Why is one better than other? Maybe its the tape (like drop-outs)? maybe the DVX audio from board is different rate, but wouldn’t that not match it’s video?

    Grady –

If the lack of sync was caused by jumps in the source material or timecode it can be rectified within Final Cut. You can replace timecode or use the Aux Time Code channels. As long as you can place the clips, even with cuts, on different tracks of the same timeline and maintain syc you can make it work.

However what you are describing means that the clips are playing at different relative speeds (this has nothing to do with the time code but rather with the clips time base) and will require, at best, re-importing some of the clips. At worst it might indicate corruption in the clip itself. Fixing this can get very complicated.

    Thanks Herb,
I’m gonna go and fiddle around, mainly try re-importing footage.
As for the Aux TC feature is that possible if i can’t get the clips to sync or are we talking about identical clips in same timeline, but on two different tracks? Not sure how Aux TC works.
