  • Audio slowly slipping out of sync

Posted by Nick Pettit on January 5, 2010 at 5:17 am

I’m recording video using a Canon Vixia HG20, and I’m recording audio using two lav mics going into an Mbox2 and Pro Tools. This means that I need to sync up sound to picture.

    My workflow is roughly this:
    1. Log and Transfer footage into FCP.
    2. Arrange the clips into a rough edit on the timeline.
    3. Export the camera audio from FCP, as it is on the timeline.
    4. Sync up the good audio in Pro Tools to the camera audio track.
    5. Bounce the good audio in Pro Tools.
    6. Reimport the good audio track into Final Cut Pro, to replace the camera audio.

Theoretically, this should sync everything, and it HAS worked for me several times in the past. The problem is, as I scrub along the timeline, the “good” audio from the lav mics and Pro Tools slowly slips out of sync with the camera audio.

As far as I can tell, camera audio is being recorded at 16-bit 48Khz, and the Pro Tools audio is also being recorded at 16-bit 48Khz. I keep the whole process at 16-bit 48Khz, whenever I import and export, unless I’m missing something here.

Another clue is that when I export the camera audio from the rough edit in the timeline (step 3), I can reimport the file that FCP produces and, when I put it on the timeline, it exhibits the same behavior: The exported audio track from FCP slowly slips out of sync with the EXACT SAME audio track on that’s already on the timeline. How could it be slipping out of sync with itself after an export?

This problem only started happening recently, because like I said, it’s worked just fine before. The big obvious thing that’s changed is that I upgraded to the latest version of Final Cut Studio, so maybe I’m missing some setting somewhere. I’ve been Googling this problem for some time, and I’ve seen several solutions, but none have worked for me.

    Thanks in advance! 😀

How about your video format? What kind of drives/mac do you have? More info please.

    Hi Nick,

Wondering if you’ve found a solution to your problem yet… I have the exact same issue. I’m recording conferences in HD on my VIXIA and the audio straight into a CD recorder, then I import the AIFF file in FCP and it slowly gets out of sync. I’m desperate because something that should take me 2 minutes now takes me 1 hour!

My temporary but effective solution, after doing some research and trying everything suggested in different forums, was modifying the audio track speed to 100.1% Now all the audio is in perfect sync. Hopefully, someday I can figure out how to get everything right from the beginning so I don’t have to make any adjustments

    I’m having the same problem.
Thank you for your temporary solution. It worked also for me.

did you find a better solution?

i just had the same problem with the same strange solution; anybody else figure out the real issue here and why this solution actually works?

Now I’m having another problem with the exported file. When I try to burn to a dvd, I get strange distortions (as if it was a scratched LP record) in the audio towards the end, even though the audio was fine in my fcp project.
