I’ve got an issue with FCP stalling out and eventually crashing. Here’s the situation:

    My Specs:
    2 – 3GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon Mac, 16 GB RAM, running OSX 10.5.8 with FCP 7.

    The Situation:
I’ve made an FCP project as a template for a re-occuring piece we simply size and import jpegs into- showing off student artwork. So, I’ve got a template sequence all set with clip placeholders. What I’ve been doing is creating a new project, and simply copying that sequence file into my new project, and then simply using the replace function to insert my jpegs into the pre-existing clip placeholders that are the desired length. The jpegs are all appropriately sized to fit my sequence settings.

The issue is that after using the replace feature on about 4-5 images (which works fine) FCP starts to chug, and I mean HARD. The whole app just slows way down. Loading clips in the viewer is slow, advancing to the next edit point in the timeline takes a good 5-10 seconds, etc. And if I push on, waiting for the app to catch up, eventually (after about 4-5 more jpeg replaces) I get the spinnning beach ball and a crash of the app. Once I restart, I again get flawless performance for about 4-5 jpeg replace edits, and then a repeat of the problem.

Mind you, the template project and the new project are all located on the same drive (a software RAID of my internal drives).

Any fixes, thoughts, and ideas are welcome. If it’s simply an error in my workflow/thinking, is there a better way to accomplish the same thing?

    Thanks in advance. –Chad

What size are the JEPG images you’re importing?

FCP will absolutely choke on any still images much larger than HD video resolution (1920×1080).

It’s a good habit to pre-process all of your still images in Photoshop so that they are 72dpi and their pixel dimensions are no larger than they need to be for the FCP sequence they’re being imported into.

Sorry, it pays to read the original post thoroughly before responding…

I see that you’ve already sized your images appropriately. You might try using TIFF files instead, but apart from that I’m not sure what could be causing your issues.
