  • Log and capture tapes whilst still editing in FCP

Posted by Ryan Lloyd on December 2, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Hi all ive got a question to pose which if there is a solution to could help me out a great deal.

I do a lot of logging and capturing footage from mini DV tape into final cut pro. I use a Sony HVR M15E deck hooked up to my Mac Pro via firewire. I log and capture tapes directly into FCP (using fcp 7)through the usual log and capture window.

However I find that when I have a lot of tapes to log it is a real pain because it ties up the machine for a good deal of time that I could be using to edit.

Does anyone know of a way that I can capture footage and edit at the same time, either through FCP or another programme/method which will allow me to bypass the waiting.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Ryan

Het another computer and copy of FCP. Use that as a capture station. You can’t capture and edit on the same machine

Cheers for the response Shane, we currently have 2 machines in the office (we are a small corporate film production company) and are planning to get a third however there are times when we need to edit on all the machines, and we cant really afford to have a machine dedicated to just logging. I guess I was hoping there may be another bit of software we could use to log the footage in the correct format and then just import it into FCP or am I just wishful thinking.

Capturing is still real time. Perhaps you should switch to tapeless, it will severely speed up your import/logging.

If not, you can even have a cheaper iMac or something to do JUST the logging. Then transfer the logged project over to a MacPro and then do the capture.

Or capture on the MacPro and edit on the iMac.

Even if there was other software to capture that isn’t FCP, you cannot edit and capture at the same time. Too demanding on the processors and hard drives…drop frames will occur or the capture will stop.

You have to look at this like this: Are you saving money by not getting another station by using additional man hours to capture the footage? No…the projects will take longer to do, and cost more, or if you have a set fee, you’ll make less per hour. Just another iMac and FCS license will free you up to capture and edit and cut your time down by 30%-50%

But can you afford to wait until a machine is available? Can you afford to stop editing to log & digitize a tape?
