  • Is picture in picture that rendering intensive… ??

    Hey

I am quite new at this FCP and now arrived to the point where i wanted to play with picture in picture and moving these with keyframes.

I have a pal standard movie in which I used a section of a HD 422 as the starting point, the section is then moved and scaled to smaller proportion of the picture using keyframes.

My problem is that the rendering required seems to be terrible. To move that HD track and scale it down in a 10 min movie took 50 min… Then i just wanted to change a keyframe and then i could look at 50 min rendering again…

That made me then abandon the project, if every small change/adjustment requires 50 min rendering it not a viable project.

BUT i must be doing something wrong i figure, otherwise the feature seems somewhat useless. I am working on a macbook 2,2 mhz core2 duo with 4 gb ram, fcp 6.

Hope someone can give some does and donts on this.

    Best wishes

    Hi Jakob,
What kind of footage and which codec do you have in your sequence?

    Really, a MacBook?

    What’s HD 422?

Switch to Unlimited RT in the timeline and don’t render.

    All the best,

    Hi

I have 2 tracks. The timeline is in standard pal resolution in prores 422 codec. On top of that video track i have another track that is fullHD in prores422.

The HD track fills the whole picture so that a the standard pal timeline works as a frame displaying part of the HD track. The idea is then to minimize a section of the HD track and move it to the corner of the pal track making a picture in picture in that way. Both videotracks are full length. They show the same scene so the idea was to show 2 camere angles at the same time with a picture in picture effect.

    Best wishes.

    Hey

HD 422 is my own short for prores422 1920×1080. Its a AVCHD track converted by FCP using log and transfer in the standard fashion.

I will try schwitching unlimited RT of, but how do i avoid rendering and still see how my “effect” ends up ? I cant work in the blind.

    BEst wishes

if you are just prepping a P in P move then you can switch to Wireframe view in the canvas so that you can easily play through to test the motion

You don’t have to render for playback if you’re in Unlimited RT.

    All the best,

    Hey Tom

Just tried to follow your suggestion, but I have the problem that the items in the RT menu has changed. In this sequence the options of the RT menu is only “play base layer only”. In another sequence I have I can see the full set of options.

Do you have an idea to what is going on there. Must be missing a setting somewhere.

    Hey

So I did find the problem with the last issue, I was not in a FCP standard setting since I worked in Pal resolution, but prores422 codec.

I schwitched to DV-Pal but my machine is still strugling though.

    Best wishes
