Unable to capture HDV footage in FCP 7
I’m running FCP 7.0.1 on a Mac Pro with dual 2.26 GHz, 12 GB of RAM…
For some reason my HDV camera is not showing up in FCP.
The camera and the footage is at 1080i and the settings in FCP are also set for this.
As there’s no 400 firewire port on my Mac Pro, I’m using an 800 to 2 pin firewire.
It’s really a mystery as to why this is happening, but it seems to be an ongoing issue with HDV footage.
Any insights or solutions would be much appreciated…

I’ve had the same exact problem with some newer MacPro’s. Make sure your easy setup is set for HDV 1080i, not a generic 1080i setup. I eventually gave up and used a firewire to SDI converter for the sake of time and went to ProRes via SDI which is were I wanted to be anyhow – i.e. get your footage out of HDV land if you can.
I did revisit the issue of the MacPro not seeing the camera via firewire after the fact. I found that just like with firewire 400, one solution that sometimes works is to plug the firewire up before the camera is turned on and while FCP is closed. Turn on the camera and get the camera playing. Then start FCP and have it look for the camera. That ended up working, but it seems that it might be hit or miss still as a lot of things are with HDV and firewire. Perhaps someone else out there has some ideas.chad

There are few things I can suggest:
-On the camera make sure you set the camera to be able to Send Video via Firewire as an output … I have a Sony Z7u and I have to tell it to see the firewire for output.
-With the Camera on VCR and plugged in = Go to View on the top menu of FCP then scroll down to the bottom and one of the chooses will pop up “REFRESH VIDEO DEVICE” … it will relook for your camera.
-If the setting of your camera is set to OFF DOWNCONVERT … then make sure you are in HDV mode in the capture window. (Audio/Video Settings)
-If on DOWNCONVERT … then check you are in DV mode (Anamorphic or not depending on what you want.)These are things I go through when the camera doesn’t see FCP or Vice-a-Versa.

Also check to see what your playback settings are on the camera. My camera defaults to auto, but it has to be set to HDV.

Somehow changing the preferences in Quicktime to use the camera in it’s recording settings allowed FCP to “see” it… Or else the fact that it started to work right after I did that was an eery coincidence…
I will apply all of these tips on the Mac Pro that has only 800 firewire next time I capture on it.

Similar to you, I am having huge problems capturing HDV1080i from SONY HDR-FX1000E camera. I have set everything on the camera to HDV output, turned off iLink, although it still says HDVin iLink on the view/display LCD on the camera, Chose Easy Set Up HDV and because I am in Australia where the video format is PAL HDV 1080i 50 sequence. Now, when I control the deck through log and capture I get a black screen in FCP – no video vision, but it all plays well on the camera, then when I press capture now, or try to capture a log it says waiting for data from device, then it stops and gives me a no data from device error message.
The only way I can capture is using the capture now and digitising to the Apple Intermediate Codec preset. This is a solution, but I get no time code or device control.
The other thought is as I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on a mac book pro 3.06 GHz with 8 GB RAM, I installed Quicktime 7.5 on the system as I found I could not export form Quicktime 10, maybe there is a conflict there as I now have both.
Can anyone please help?

Wow. Finally! I had a very similar runaround trying to get a Sony miniDV deck and/or a HVR-V1U cam HD footage into FCP7 in Snow Leopard. The trick that worked for me? Open up Quicktime Player (10.0) and select ‘New Movie Recording’. Hopefully you can see the footage in QT. I just had to capture a few seconds. Once that happened…opened up FCP and all was good. HD Firewire settings – joyous.

Wow! I Don’y know if you’re reading this Jeff Hawley, but you saved my life! I’m currently digitalising old footage from betacams and als DVcams and I could wrap my head around why i didnt see the video. So thanks!
