Can anyone tell me if there is any way round previewing mpeg2 in fcp7

I have a sony hvrz7. It records compact flash files using the mpeg2 stream.

the log and transfer window will import the WHOLE file. But I only want to select rather than ingest the whole large file onto my ext media drive

So if anyone out there can advise, this would be much appreciated

Do I need to convert to anything?

    Cheers

In log/transfer you can watch your footage in the preview window, and then you can set an IN/OUT. it will only convert that little bit for you.

In FCP7, the preview window reads the following message

PREVIEW DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS FORMAT

(i.e. HDV mpeg2 COMING FROM MY CAMCORDER HDV Z7)

So I cannot set In and Out points because it won’t let me preview: it’s greyed out

    So any way round this?

Sorry Graeme, i’m zero on ideas here – haven’t worked with HDV before. Is it a tape based camcorder?
