Layer styles in CS3?
Hi all,
I know you can edit PS layer styles in AE CS3, but can you ‘create’ them in AE? They are about the only thing that prevents me from using AE as my gfx tool from start to finish..as many of my clients like bevelled text /shape effects in their jobs (don’t ask!) and AE’s bevel alpha doesn’t really cut it. That and being able to group layers in the timeline to tidy up the palette. These abilities in AE would be mind blowing for me and to work exclusively in one app (apart from some intense retouching) would be great..
I’d love to *not* have to create all my GFX in PS then import them into AE for animation. Plus the fact that PS doesn’t have a ‘live update’ on my client monitor (only a manual hotkey export) means that to do it all in AE would be fanastic!
Any observations guys?…I want to push for an upgrade to the CS3 suite and that would be the kind of workflow push that could sell it to the boss!

You could not create them prior to CS3,
now you can:
Just right-click on a layer and you’ll see the option “Layer Styles”, enable them there.
It’s also in the menu under “Layer”
(It’s probably also in the manual) 😉
Now the thing that ticks me off enormously is that the only way to edit styles is in the timeine: there should be a seperate inspector just like for Effects, or ideally a non-modal version of the styles editor from Photoshop…
Baffling that they didn’t put that in.AE really could use some ‘inspector’-windows: twirling open everything in the timeline so you only see 1 layer there (and sometimes not even all of it’s properties) is tedious and stupid IMO.

That’s great news! Sounds a bit fumbly to edit and create, but defo a huge improvement.
I agree the twirl downs can be annoying to spin back up one by one to gain GUI realestate, but you can you the hotkeys for effects and stuff like position, rotation, etc.. (E, P or R respectively) or shift-click them for several at once. This doesn’t however work for editing text properties and when you hit ‘E’ for effects it twirls them all open. At least it does in AE7.
Haven’t got CS3 yet, so can’t look at the manual! Ta for info anyway.
So….no ‘grouping’ of layers in the timeline yet? I guess pre-comping is the best we got…
