I’m soon to edit an as-yet unshot job which will produce 10 x 5-minute commercials destined for the internet. It will be a 3 camera-shoot and I pray that all cameras will sync up to each other via the means I have suggested to the producers, so that I can edit via Multiclip.

However, that’s not what I am asking – don’t laugh, but the cameras will all be Kodak Zi8 and they’ll be shooting1080p. The files, straight from the camera are H.264 and the dimensions of the material are 1920 x 1080.

My question is: Does anyone know which codec I should edit with? And can you suggest a conversion method / workflow?

My computer is a 2 x 3.2 Ghz Quad-Core Intel- Xeon with 8 gigs of RAM, running Leopard and FCP7.
I have experimented with my own Zi8 camera and whatever codec I use, I get red render lines. With all the footage I expect to receive, I want to keep rendering to an absolute minimum.

    Thanks.

Convert the clips to Prores 1080@29.97 (non-HQ should be fine) before bringing into FCP and you should be golden.

Do you know – I just found that out for myself.
I did one more test, first converting it into the format you suggested and no render lines of any hue!
    So thank you Colin.

So often just asking the question can present the answer.

    Good luck with the edit!

I will suggest to convert the H264 to Prores keeping all the settings of the original clips: Size and time-base (I guess 30fps). Then Conform the 30fps clips to 29’98 in CinemaTools.

I wonder if this would have an effect on the audio sync though?

[Colin McQuillan] “I wonder if this would have an effect on the audio sync though? “
When you conform 24/25 your picture and audio and speeded up or down a 4%. In certain cases (music, voices) you must be careful.
When going from 30 to 29’98fps, Audio and video will be changed in speed by a 0’36%. Nothing to worry about.

I just got this little camera too! Kinda neat, in a cracker jack kind of way. So i convert this footage in Compressor to the ProRes you speak of?

David, If that’s what you’re recommending would you mind giving me the specific ProRez settings that you prefer?
    Thank you.

In compressor use find “Apple Prores for Progressive material” (non-HQ)

Other Workflows -> Advanced Format Conversions -> Apple Codecs -> Apple Prores for Progressive material

By default it will set the export display bounds and frame rate to that of the source material so nothing to change here unless you want to change the video settings from”current” to 29.97.

As Rafael suggests you my find changing the frame rate using Cinema tools better.
