    hello,

    i have been trying to do a little conversion from material that
    was shot and, so far, edited DV PAL (720×576). I am trying to convert it to H264
    quicktime – 1280×1024. I know it sounds like a ridiculous thing to do
    but it’s for a computer based installation piece and unfortunately those specs are not under my control.

    So far i have tried:

    1.Keeping timeline DV PAL, exported at current settings
    and brought into compressor – used the frame controls set to better, progressive, better with motion control also set to better.
    I still get an interlaced look in some tilts.

    2. Changing timeline settings field dominance to “none” which did
    an ok job of deinterlacing but, upon export and run through compressor
    led to artefacts wherever i have done any re-speeds in the timeline

    3. Exporting straight from timeline using QT conversion best
    settings, ticking “de-interlace” in the size box
    This didn’t get rid of the interlaced look on the tilts either as you’d expect.

    I’ll freely admit to not being an expert at this side of thing so any constructive tips on what i can do now with the tools at my disposal (FCP Studio 2) would be really appreciated. I haven’t yet tried natress – i’m sure it’s great but i don’t have it….

    Your approach number 1 would be the expected way to go. Since you are up-sizing the video, you could experiment with Adaptive Details and increase the two sliders and see how it looks. That is a really kind of weird final output size, seemingly based on a somewhat outdated monitor format rather than a standard 4:3 aspect ratio. Your video will have to be cropped to stay in aspect or you’ll have to live with a slight distortion.

    Maybe if you could post a sample of the problem you’re seeing on the tilts we could diagnose it. It could be aliasing (jaggies) rather than interlacing.

    Thanks Tom,

    I think i will experiment with the adaptive slider – hopefully it won’t add too much to the transcode time….

    I’ve also just tried using Joe’s Filters, “Joe’s Deinterlacer” in Final Cut setting it to Upper field (odd) then exporting out a QT ref before running through compressor which does seem to help quite a bit.

    Experimenting is never ridiculous. Is the way to learn. many people is scare to change any setting. They are afraid of their Mac blowing up.

    Christian,
    The problem I see is that your 1280×1024 frame, is not 4×3, neither 16×9.
    You will need to crop some stuff if you don’t want your PAL movie to get distorted.
    Open a new sequence (DV PAL).
    – Change the size to 1280×1024.
    – Change the Pixels to Square.
    – Change the Field Order to NONE.
    Drop your DV footage on it and apply it a De-interlacing filter.

    Thanks very much Rafael,

    i’m trying this method now…
    It would seem to make sense – but the only thing i worry about is FCP’s ability to scale the video (compared to compressor’s frame controls) – what do you think? It does seem to come out a bit blurry…

    Any argument for leaving the frame size as close to 720×576 as possible
    and then using compressor to re-scale in the final step do you think?
