Hello folks, OK, I must apologize for annoying question. 🙂

I’m getting really close to buying mac pro and want to use windows Vista or XP to take advantage of Intel. (so I can run 3D max. After Effects too of course) My question that I can never get an answer for is that I just don’t know if I need top of the line like, 8 core, 4 gig ram, which will cost me almost $6000. So I was wondering if I should just get like 4 core (two dual 2.6 ghz with 2 gig ram. that way, the price will drop significantly.

I’ve never owned mac before and now I’m getting really convinced to get one. I’m also thinking even the 4 core with 2gig ram would still be faster that G5 which a lot of the design houses or productions still make money with. Can someone give me some answer, like ok I’d go with this set up, don’t even think about getting bla, bla.

You see I can’t even decide and justify the cost of machines.
    Please help.

    Thank you.

We’ll the more cores the better, especially now that AECS3 supports multi-processing but the key is RAM, you need to throw loads of it at AE to get the most out of all those cores. My suggestion is go for a 4 core and put at least 4 GB ram in it, with more if you can stretch it. No sense having 8 cores if they just sit there idle.

I figured if I got the 4 core unit that I could set that extra $1k aside and make the upgrade to my next Mac a year or two earlier. Plus I knew there were some plug-ins I needed to include in my budget.

I think a lot of it comes down to how much you use AE and 3d apps. Photoshop and Flash sure won’t benefit much from the extra cores, and I spend quite a bit of time there.

I’m sure it would be nice to have 8 processors but I look at it as a $2k proposition–the extra cost of the machine and the extra cost of the additional RAM you would need.

I agree – get all 8cores and 8>32GB ram if you can afford it. But with 4>8GB RAM and 4 cores you will fly in AE unless you’re doing tonnes of complex 1080 HD projects, in which case you’d defo notice difference with 8cores.

Just keep in mind that Windows XP running on a Mac Pro will only see 2 GB’s of RAM no matter how much you have installed.
